Hobbies on AMCAS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm listing.

I listed what I do; the hobbies show that I have a life away from everything else related to great grades...keeps my sanity.

I'm not listing them, but it's not a bad idea. I did list intramural sports. I'll definitely tell them about my hobbies at the interview.

I listed Kung Fu. I also mentioned playing guitar in other sections. I think you should definitely list hobbies that help the adcoms get a better view of the big picture of who you are. If two kids have similar stats, they'll probably take the more socially adjusted/well rounded of the two, and hobbies are a good way to show that.

I listed IM sports and choir, but those are organized activities. If you think listing a hobby will enhance your application, go for it! 🙂

I'm not filling it out this summer, but I'd probably say weight lifting, ski racing, and singing in choir(s).

where WOULD you put them...in EC ?amcas....right?

^^^^^ Yeah under Post-Secondaries on AMCAS.

I only put a couple hobbies down that I've had my whole life and that I could explain as having some meaningful impact on me. I figure I can put the other stuff on secondaries if they ask for them or talk about them during my interview.

I am also planning on listing hobbies/social clubs I belong to. I thought maybe I could just use one of the 15 EC spaces for this. Maybe use a heading of Miscellaneous hobbies and then list a few of them in the explanantion section?? What do you guys think of this?

I wouldn't put weightlifting. My boyfriend was going to put that down, but we decided basically everyone goes to the gym.

Not like me they don't. I'm pretty serious about it. I was a twig at 5'8 and 115 pounds when I started college, but now I'm 160 pounds and my combined bench/squat/deadlift is approaching 1000 pounds. I'd put down that I'm a bodybuilder, but that tends to have a pretty narcissistic stereotype associated with it.

I don't go weightlifting.... can we say walking-stick? 😛

put that you are a powerlifter. body builders work out to make their body look nice. powerlifters work out because they like to torture themselves and be as strong as possible.

Eh, I'll say I'm a powerbuilder. 😀 I want a bit of both - functionality and physique.

I see the EC section of the AMCAS as a resume. In that respect, I wouldn't put anything down on there that I wouldn't list for an employer. You can show how well rounded you are in the interview, but first win them over with your credentials on the application.
