so i'm in a combined degree program (B.A/M.D) and it's just been kinda' rough--im in my 2nd year of the medicine curriculum, and i'm just sick of it--it seems as if ive been in school for so long, yet i haven't and all these years all ive been doing is just studying--never really had a "REAL" undergrad to chill cuz we go all year around.

So now I have a problem--that all these years i've been wanting to do well, and have studied hard and have done well--and now i really don't have any hobbies. I don't know what to do when i don't feel like studying (other than the worthless things: tv, computer, sdn, etc.). But i'd like to pick up a good hobby--but have no idea what i am interested in. The gym is whatever, i started running but got lazy/sick of that--don't know anything else that would be fun--i would love to fly--like get a pilots license--but there is no time for that and it's mad expensive, so that's out. Any suggestions??

Brewing beer is very low time committment, fun, and you get something nice at the end. Pretty simple to start with, too. Just go to your local brew store, and tell the guy you want a starter kit. It'll probably cost about $80, and will include all the buckets and everything you need for your first batch; in about 3-4 weeks, you'll be able to try your first beverage.

I got some suggestions.

-lift weights (can even find a partner from med school, that way ur schedules will be similar, plus you can motivate one another and keep it consistent)
-you can play squash, I hear its good stress relief
-play chess

I think the goal of a hobby is to take your mind away from what currently occupies it, and allows you to truely relax. Getting your pilots license is a lot of hard work, probably equal to an extra course for a year, but once you have it, it is very relaxing. You could always look into hot air balloons, that is cheaper, and I am sure you could get some free rides if you drive the chase car.

I would also suggest looking into horses - Winston Churchill said 'the outside of a horse, is good for the inside of a man', I could not agree me. Riding is my main hobby, I play polo regularly, and am starting hunting this season - very exciting stuff!

You should start. You can plan for each brew to be ready the weekend after blocks 😀

"Beer is proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy."
--Ben Franklin.

Now, how can you argue with Franklin?

bike riding...hiking...rock climbing...sailing...yoga. 🙂
Origami...painting...pencil drawing....music
exploring different restaurants in your city....reading for enjoyment....knitting....reading about different religions....learning a new language/culture and then going to that country to practice. 😀

The possibilites are endless. 🙂 I am learning knitting and origami at the moment. I plan to do some bike riding next...maybe when I'm done with med school I can go ride my bike through europe or something cool like that.

Videogames 👍

I second the videogames.

Halo 2 + Xbox Live 😀

My niece beat it over a week ago. She said it was a lot shorter than the fisrt one.

Cooking. Drawing. Guitar. Womanizing. All worthwhile hobbies.

Try some partner dance lessons (i.e. swing, salsa, tango, etc.). Be sure to save an evening a week to go out and dance socially with the lessons, otherwise they're pretty useless. You need a weekly social dance to reinforce the lessons. Gets you away from the medical stuff.

Got tools, and some money. try some mods on your car (provided you have one,and its worth doing anything to it). Try to avoid "rice mods" over sized spoiler, fart cans exhaust, ect....

I used to do 4x4s but now prefer import tuning. countless hours can be spent/wasted on it. yep if I could have back all the money I ever spent on cars, I would spend it on a car.

If you were attracted to running but found it boring, try rollerblading. If you stick with it untill you're comfortable on the things I bet you'll like it. Or you might want to get into swimming. It's a great workout and it's very relaxing.

Here's some more.
Learn to cook - it'll save you from eating student priced slop.
Get into wine - a glass of red with dinner is good for those arteries.
Service your car - a real skill, saves money (can lead to full on car-mod addiction, use caution 😉 )
Learn a language - spanish is always handy
Pick up an instrument - half hour a day time investment.
Yoga - very relaxing, can alternate with workout days. Helps you relax
Video games - I recommend GTA San Andreas but that's not for everyone.
Reading - non medical stuff.
Juggling - I do that while waiting for my dinner to cook. Makes cooking less boring.
Carpentry - build your own furniture. saves cash and is fun.
Photography - document your life, pays off in a few years.
Pets - I recomend cats. That's just my bias. I'm getting a dog too when I get a yard.

Start by making hobbies out of the things you sort of have to do anyway. That way it's not really a time investment. More of a quality enhancement. Good luck. 🙂

There are so many things to do.... You don't have ANY interests? If you like running and want to combine health with hobby, you can try trail running or hiking. Its a lot less boring and still a good work out... depends on where your location is, though. Or set a goal for your running.. 5K, 1/2 marathon, marathon.

Go to a bookstore and just start looking around. the possibilites are endless.

cool, thanks for all the great ideas guys--i do appreciate it. I'd actually like to play tennis. I used to hit around when i was a kid, and itjust got dropped. I guess I need to get some professional lessions though. Does anyone know usually how much they run?

Th book store roaming is great--i've done that so many times. But usually i am there to study, and it's like "im wasting time", but yea, you can be there for hours just walking around and skimming---

well thanks for all the help..keep the ideas comming. =)

The above mentioned website will tell you about tennis centers near you. Some even offer the first lessons for free 👍
