Hofstra

Pro:
  • Smaller class (I like the ideal of having a more tight knit class)
  • Slightly cheaper with scholarship offer
  • higher ranking on USNews
  • Research with Cold Spring Harbor
  • Part of Northwell Health, largest employer in NYS
Con:
  • No clinical training site on campus (though they are a short drive away)
  • relatively new school
  • mandatory classes with no recorded lectures (less concerning as I'm a morning person and don't mind the push)
NYMC
Pro:
  • Level 1 Trauma Center at site with a few clinical sites on campus
  • Older better known school
  • Make it really easy to get into research on campus
  • Recorded lectures
Con:
  • Larger class
  • no financial aid info yet
  • lower ranking (according to USNews)

Both are P/F, with Hofstra having a larger portion of its classes as PBL while NYMC is more traditional. I'm interested in a few specialties, including EM, Peds and Optho. Both schools seem to match into these and in the NY area. I've lived in NYC for a few years now and absolutely love it. Would love to stay in the area and its also close to family.

I think both places could take you to where you would like to go especially if you want to practice specialties you listed in NYC area. To me, your heart seems more at Hofstra and if mandatory classes / innovative curricula doesn't bother you it seems like a good fit for you.

I think you could easily find research through either Cold Spring (amazing facility) or through Northwell system.

And I agree with @thetenthletter that its ranking will likely only climb in years to come

I guess location wise Hofstra is definitely more "NYC" than NYMC, as you are right on the Queens border. Maybe that can make a difference.

The curricula at each school are completely different - this should really drive your decision. FWIW, I'm a current NYMC M3 and I've lived in NYC the entire time. Feel free to PM with questions.
