A few questions:

Is it possible to hold more than one acceptance after May 15, if you pay the deposit at more than one school (realizing that you will forfeit one)?

I know more and more high school graduates are doing this as a way to have a little longer to think about where they want to go for college. The reason I ask is that what happens if you don't have your financial aid squared away by decision time?...

If you hold multiple acceptances after May 15th without first consulting schools, they can and will withdraw their offers of acceptance. This = bad.

That said, if you're waiting on fin aid packages from a school or two, you can often call them and tell them that you're interested in their school, but you need to wait on all of your financial packages in order to make a decision. Many schools will accomodate you... but some may not. This whole process is mighty complicated game. 🙁

Yes, that would be very BAD. Thanks for the heads up.

The May 15th deadline is really to protect you from the schools. It gives you until May 15th (plenty of time after financial aid offers come out - these should come in March and you should have no problems finalizing them by May) to come to a final decision of where you want to go.

On May 15th, a list is released to medical schools and they can view other schools you are still holding acceptances at. At this point the rules AMCAS made to protect you (no more than $100 deposit, 2 weeks time to send in contract etc) no longer protect you.

So medical schools can call you up and tell you that they want a $3000 deposit by 5pm or they are withdrawing your acceptance. Or other ridiculous requests to force you to choose their school or lose your acceptance.

So no, you REALLY DO NOT WANT to hold acceptances after May 15th - holding them for the months prior to that is more than enough time to make your decision and finalize your financial aid and I wouldn't test the medical schools and what they will do if you're still holding multiple acceptances at that point.

last year, even though schools said this would happen, nothing was really enforced until at least mid-June...

i wouldn't recommend tempting fate on that one, but it didn't seem to happen right on may 15 by any means.

OK i have another question!
Let's say you have 1 acceptance by May 15 but it's not your first choice and you're waiting for your first choice school's decision which had previously put you on waitlist. So you really want to go to your 1st choice school but you hold the other acceptance in case you never come off the waitlist. What do you do in that case after May 15?

are on a wait list of your number 1? Is that an issue?

You can hold as many waitlists as you like after May 15th, but only 1 acceptance. And you can take an offer from any school you're waitlisted at up until the day you start at a medical school.

Totally wrong. Actually you can hold as many acceptacnces after may 15th as you choose, but the schools can choose to not hold you after that though. So be careful.

So, the AAMC has changed its policy. Instead of telling medical schools who is holding multiple acceptances they will be releasing the names, addresses, and phone numbers of those holding multiple acceptances on SDN. Expect many angry PMs, phone calls, and a gang of waitlisted SDNers outside your front door.

Frankly, if you have multiple acceptances (like say 6 acceptances) and you just can't make up your mind where to go... well... you don't deserve to goto medical school.+pity+

One interviewer told me that they were shocked to see that one of their acceptances had held 10+ acceptances until May 15 - this reflected a very inconsiderate a-hole who was not helping their future colleagues in any way.

For those who are on a waitlist for their top choice school - just hold onto your 2nd choice school and then withdraw the rest. If you get in off the waitlist in July, you can then withdraw your acceptance from the 2nd choice school.

Point is, if you get into where you want to go - don't be a jerk and hold onto multiple acceptances. At least, once you find out your financial aid packages - please make your decisions and then withdraw from schools you don't plan on going to.

It honestly shouldn't be that hard to decide. If you're seriously having that much trouble because all these schools are so equal in your mind, then start flipping coins.

Holding onto a bazillion acceptances post May 15th is definitely a d-bag maneuver, lol.

Schools that have accepted you can see where else you are holding acceptances in mid-March. Later that month all schools to which you have applied can see the list. Also you can't hold more than one acceptance after May 15. You can be on as many waitlists as you want, though.

I remember last year some people on SDN hadn't gotten financial aid info. from some of their choices by May 15 (can someone confirm/refute this?). If you don't know the financial situation you should not be forced into choosing a school.
