Is there anyone who can tell me more about this research path such as its pros and cons? Can this be done at any academic program or are there only a few schools that participate?

I learned more about this program at RSNA. It was originally designed for Rad Onc residents and is 18 months of research compressed into your residency such that you graduate with everyone else. This program isn't very popular because most residents regard it as time that draws away from clinical work that could be useful for such things as board prep. Hope this helps.

is it popular amongst those aimed at obtaining academic faculty positions for a career in diagnostic?

I don't know. I know a few academic radiologists but never heard them talk about doing Holman Pathway or even suggesting it as a good route into academic radiology. Then again, I never specifically asked about it.

I've only met one person that did the Holman pathway and although at a prestigious program for fellowship this person seemed much weaker than the other fellows clinically. Most places don't seem to offer it outright, but might if you ask. I think it kind of died a slow death.

Many programs have their own version of it - e.g. UCSD has two research spots where you do a whole year of research after your intenship but before doing a 4-year radiology residency. I liked the place but personally I couldn't take another year off finishing training.
