Is there homework/essays/other assignments like in undergrad in medical school? Or are you simply expected to spend your time outside of class solely studying for upcoming exams which make up your whole grade?

In my experience, "homework" was really only to be done for "flipped classroom" lectures where you had to read the lecture ahead of time and use class time for questions & understanding. Other than this homework was just preparing for upcoming exams.

A majority of projects (essays, presentations, etc) were assigned in our medical history & physical and humanities classes.

We have homework that's due every week...a set of short answer/essay questions. You 'grade' them yourself by comparing them to the ideal answers, so it's really just a completion thing. We used to have weekly multiple choice problem sets due too, but they've stopped requiring those.

They're actually pretty useful, good exam practice since our tests are the same format. But we don't have grades, so there's nothing for them to factor into.

As others have said, it varies by school. At my school we had ~4-6 hours/week 1st year, 2-4 hours/week 2nd year, and 3rd year it's been pretty dependent on what rotation you're on; Peds, OB/Gyn, and IM are probably the worst offenders.
