I understand that thos who have homologous features share a common ancestor, but does it mean that the fnc of let say their arms have to be different?

And then also-- what does a common ancestor mean? How far back of an ancestor?

These q might be stupid to some but I really want to understand the concept clearly.

Thanks

Yes, homologous features such as a human's arm and a bat's wing would come from common ancestry (mammals), and have different functions.
