I was accepted to the fall class of AUC this year and I just received my MCAT score for April. I got a 28P and have a 3.7 GPA with a post-bac from the BU medical science program. I have applied many times before in the past with lower MCAT scores (25 and 24) and was wondering if I should go to AUC or give US schools another shot. If I matriculate to AUC does that void my application for US schools for next year? Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Nothing wrong with going to AUC, in the end you will end up with an MD and a good residency if you do well. However, u.s. schools are always considered to be the best route if you can get in. Simply put, by going to a u.s. school you will have more options during and after medical school. No one can tell you if you will definately get in or not, but with your numbers I personally think you will get accepted to many u.s. schools. Your gpa is excellent, solid mcat, and you have taken hardcore science classes at the BU program. Apply to many schools in the u.s. and you will get in somewhere, unless you have social or any other issues and you display that at the interview. And numbers aren't everything, my ex-gf graduated with a 2.9 and I think she had something like a 2.7 science gpa, and scored a 37 or 39 on the mcat. She was invited to over a dozen interviews and accepted to 3 or 4 of them. The other schools said that they were very impressed with her mcat and thought that she is a smart person, but they were not sure if she would try in medical school and didn't think she was worthy of gaining admission. So numbers are not everything, but they do help you get an interview, and you have the numbers for that.

you could always go to AUC and apply to US Allo schools so this way you don't waste time if your not accepted. Worst Case seneario that you apply and get in then your in the hole a few thousand big deal you'll make that back and then more. But if you wait and don't go down then you may not get in to a US school and you'll be back in the same situation you are now whereas you are not accepted to a US school and now starting a year later than you could have been had you gone to AUC.

Ask yourself this would it be worth it for me to wait a year and not potentially waste money on a carib school to see if I get into a US school and if I don't I'll still go to a carib school but will be behind a year so that I'll be one year further away from graduation. I personally am going to reapply this fall (as of right now) and see if I get in but if I don't at least I won't be a year behind where I would have been if I waited. Also if you do wait your going to have to find a J-O-B and no one really want's that. If I could I would become a professional student but eventually loans must be repaid and I can't raise a family (let alone find a wife who will marry a professional student while she brings home the bacon (mmmmmm pork)) because the student life is sweeeet, how ever much undergrads sometimes say they hate it.

Assuming that he applies to more than one schools and get more than one interviews, wouldn't he has to skip a lot of med school classes to go to the interviews? Skipping lecture is fine but what about labs such as anatomy. Do they not require attendance in these labs? I'm just wondering because I'm thinking of applying to the carribean this cycle also and if I don't get into a US med school I will re-apply even if I am attending the carribean.

A friend of mine had the same mcat numbers as you did (just he had a 27 for his third and last mcat) and a lower gpa (probably around 3.3-3.4) and got into medical school in ny (I think Albany medical college). So, I would advise you to reapply and give it a shot. You have nothing to lose but time. With those numbers you will definitely get into caribbean schools again and so I would go for it if I was you. If you don't you might always wonder, "What if?"

good luck

I would definitely go caribbean while trying to reapply thru amcas. I had a friend during my first term at sgu that got into a state side school during our finals. It sure didn't hurt his application at all. I think they loved the fact that he could already hack the rigors of med school and had enough motivation to not waste a year just to see if he was going to get into a state school or not. He was even tutoring some of the 1st years in the anatomy lab when he went on the interview. how funny is that? If I remember correctly, his numbers were 3.4 and 28 on the mcat.

So it is possible to accept the invitation to AUC, start school there, and continue to apply to US schoools still?

of course!

Not to rain on your parade but I'm pretty sure it would be very difficult to get into US schools after matriculating into a Caribbean school. Obviously you would need to inform the US schools that you are already in medical school and most people that are in grad school that apply to med schools are expected (in many cases required) to finish their degree before matriculation so I'm not sure if you could get away with just dropping out for a US acceptance. I would be very careful here and check with all the US schools you will reapply to about what you are considering doing and not just go on the word of a bunch of SDNers cuz it would suck to go spend a year down there and find it even more difficult (it's difficult enough!) to get into US medical schools because of this choice. With your great BU gpa you should have a shot this year at US schools so if that is what you really want, reapply this year! Then if nothing pans out, go down to the Caribbean. Just don't jeopardize your US admissions chances unless US med schools tell you for sure that a year at a Carib med school (which you would drop out of) will not seriously hurt your chances. Good luck 🙂

This is simply not true. I've seen it done before and it did not hurt the person's chances of getting into a US school. The fact that my friend had already taken some medical school classes and had done well in them only helped solidify that he would make an exceptional candidate for medical school.
