  1. Pre-Optometry

Hi everyone! I've been reading these boards for awhile now and decided to start posting 🙂

Anyways, I have decided that I want to go to optometry school, but I feel as if my grades are not good enough. I am a junior at a competitive college majoring in integrative biology with a cum gpa of 2.92. However, I have become more focused on school and I know my grades this semester will be much higher than before raising my gpa. I plan on shadowing an optometrist over winter break. I have volunteer experience and am involved in clubs and may do research next semester.

I will do whatever possible to obtain my dreams. I would just like to know if you think I have a fighting chance at this? Please give me your honest opinion and thanks for reading 🙂

Hey there.

2.92 isn't great, but it is good enough to get you in. Also, you're still a junior so there's plenty of time to bring up your GPA. if you get a good score on your OATs (say... 340+ across the board), and do your shadowing/internships, and show that you're committed to the professioin, then chances are you will get accepted into optometry school. for example my friend got into berkeley w/ a 2.9 last year, and usually people would say "noo that's impossible." anyway don't let what others say let you down (aka your counselors) and just do your best. g'luck! 👍

Unfortunately a 2.9 is good enough to get you into some optometry schools. But, I wouldn't count on it. I think it is more of the exception rather than the norm. Try to bring up your grades over the next semesters, that will help a lot. And it is important to score well on your OAT, that will help you even more than your grades. I think you are headed in the right direction though.

I'm really glad to hear that you have your goal and am working towards it! As a 2.9 is a little low now, if you can raise it and have a great rest of your application I'm sure you can get in somewhere. My advise would be to be around Optometry as much as you can. I work at a office a few hours a week and the Doctor there really took me under his wing. I've learned so much there and during my Interview they were really impressed with my knowledge of the field. So I think that is a great asset to have. Go above and beyond their shadowing hours, it will not only show that you are really dedicated but it will also give you a really good idea of whether or not you actually want to be an optometrist. Best of luck and study hard
