Hey everyone,
I just had a quick question. I have been all over this forum trying to decipher something. Basically it seems like the consensus that US MD=US DO>> IMG. Now I am a Canadian and I pretty committed to the DO route. My question is why would residency directors favour a US DO over lets say an MD from Australia, a developed country with a great education/health care system ? Is it just because of the US education or any other factors.

Thanks

For residency directors, US MD > DO >>>>> anything else. USMD's still have it easier getting residencies, but DO's are picking up ground every year (my opinion).

While there are undoubtedly good FMG's and IMG's out there, there are too many with language issues and a lack of knowledge. The range is too large. 1 FMG family doc is a complete genius and I refuse to see anyone else in the city unless I'm dying. On the other hand, I've met a few FMG's/IMG's at my institution that know little more than our MSIII's. Some non-US schools definitely do a better job of training their students than others. Many PD's would rather not take these risks.

So program directors are even reluctant to take a risk on well established schools like SGU where rotations are done the USA, with a USA modeled curriculum? Why though? Just trying to wrap my head around this concept.
Thanks

Others have said it well, but just stay in the US for medical education if you plan on practicing here. It's complicated and could be debated forever, but you're just much safer for residency (ACGME) to go US DO.

Yes. SGU has it better than other foreign medical schools, but they still face LOTS of bias.
