Hey SDNers, (especially current MS-IVs and interns)

I'm currently an MS-III and my fiancé and I have set our wedding date for a few days after I submit my ERAS application. I was curious about the timeline of the interview offers. Will they really come that soon after ERAS submission? Should I go somewhere for the honeymoon were I have constant access to email and phone, or is once or twice a day access okay? Any other advice for this point in an MS-IV's life?

Thanks.

What specialty? That's really the key here. They all notify at different times and even within a specialty, different programs will do different things. I had friends who got offers the next day; I didn't get an offer for about a month or so; some friends from other fields got first offers later than me.

I got married right in the midst of applying for residency. I went on a one-night honeymoon to a picturesque, outdoorsy town about 1.5 hours from where I lived. For me, this was perfect, because it was enough of a get-away to rejuvenate & spend some alone time with my new spouse, but it wasn't long enough that I got anxious about applications and interviews. You have the entire rest of your life to go on 'honeymoons' with your spouse! I say save the 'big' trip for a time when you can totally and completely relax. In the meantime, book a weekend or long weekend away as a quick celebration of your new life together.

If you're not applying to a surgical field, you should have constant access to your email. Seriously...interview days can disappear even if you only wait a couple hours to respond.

Edited to clarify: If you're applying to a surgical field, you should still have constant access to your e-mail, but you can chill for a few days after submitting because invites don't usually go out right away for those fields. Meanwhile, my peds interviews started rolling in the day after submission (and we submitted on a Sunday, so virtually no one was reviewing that first day).

I think my record was I missed my desired day when I took a whole 12 minutes to respond to the invite. It can get a little nuts!

That said, if you must go, you can always have friends/family monitor things for you. I set up separate gmail account for ERAS and then gave my family the password and my calendar with all the desired days on it so they could respond immediately during times when I couldn't. You can look through old threads here and on other boards to find out which programs in your desired field may send invites during the time you're away, and you can look at their websites or contact their program coordinators about potential dates as it gets closer to time. This way you can tell whoever monitors your account exactly what days you want.

You can also just delete all the non ERAS accounts from your phone and monitor it yourself while you're away so only interview invites will trigger it.

Just echoing all of the advice above. Depending on the field some programs even send out more interview invites than they have spots available (OHSU for IM comes to mind). As long as you have constant access and you are willing to respond/schedule at the drop of a hat you should be alright

OP where are you going? I've been to some pretty remote parts of the world and had phone/internet access. Then again, my phone bill for those months was ridiculous...but I think in this case it's justified

Large specialties that just rapid fire invites out (IM, peds, etc) you will want to stay by a computer

Small surgical subspecialties you can honeymoon away - invites wont be sent for a few weeks after.

And second the set up an email exclusively for applications, with a sound notification on your phone. You will not regret it, but will forever get palpitations when you hear that ring. You will want to respond within 5 minutes. Srsly.

For Radiology some invites were going out within a couple days.

Agree with above posters that you have to respond FAST. I had an invite from a prelim medicine program go to my spam folder so I missed it for 2 days, and when I went to schedule an interview there were literally none left!

Thanks for all the replies! I plan on applying in Emergency Medicine. We just had some class meetings about scheduling 4th year, and apparently this is now a non-issue... I'll still be on my Emergency rotations during September so it looks like the honeymoon will be pushed back until a time when we can really enjoy ourselves 🙂

Good choice! If you put it off until summer, keep in mind that many programs (at least in my field, not sure about EM) have a 1-2 week orientation before the traditional early July start date. It's something that's complicating my own honeymoon plans this year, so thought I'd pass on the advice!
