Anyone know of any instances where a family member/friend of a predental student hooked the student up with an interview and potential acceptance? i.e. have someone to talk to adcom via connections or something.

Never heard of any, but I'm sure it happens. It happens everywhere.

When we were at Temple, Brain told us that there was one guy trying to donate a million dollar to the school to get one spot there.

He also said he ended up buying Bently with that money. jk 😀

Yes, I've heard of numerous occasions in which doctors put in a good word to the adcomms for someone, at the school they attended themselves. It works, and it can be a tad frustrating when someone has the upper hand like that.

I once overheard someone in one of my upper levels telling his friend he really deserved a C, but got an A on an exam. The kid's father is the prof's dentist. C'est la vie...

Damn that sucks. But the good thing is that the majority of the seats don't happen to get filled that way (Hopefully...)

You always have the sweetest responses. Although you better be right or else I'll be snatching up ALL your chicken!!!

Pssss, wanna lend me your score? 😍

But of course you get hot hot fudgy cookies, no question. (I'm making myself hungry). BTW, in case you were curious, my baking skills are out of this worldddd.

Hook ups? Def. I know it happens a lot when applying for residencies. I have not benefited from a hook up yet and won't(being the first in dental in my family) but my bros in the medical field will/have...life sucks

Thanks Jigs (I like trying to find other "cool" ways of saying your name) but I think that if our situations were switched you would have done much better. I couldn't go to Taiwan, take college courses and then rock one of their standardized tests.
I said life sucks bc Nepotism is never a crowd pleaser but put in a same situation most people I believe resort to it.
ps I am a little disappointed that my "generic, better than nothing, picked it out of the list sdn gives us" Ben Franklin avatar wasn't included as one of the best on here!? What gives

Yes it happens. I know someone at my school who scored at or below 18 in ALL sections of his DAT. His academic record is piss poor - he's always laughing about his repeating of classes. His dad is a G.P. that works in dental education, and sister is a 4th year dental student. He got interviews from Temple, UPENN, and Maryland. Of course I met him at an interview, and his dad and sister walked him in and met the staff. Of course he will get in.

What atrocity. Dang. No justice in that whatsoever.

Check this out, folks.

I took a kaplan course in HS for the SATs. Some dude at the center was studying for the MCATs. He graduated in the early 90s. Took the MCATs 13 times. Yeah, I know. 13 times. Back then, they only offered the test twice a year. And he took it 13 times and still didn't get in. He can't sit still for one second. Guess what, he still got into the local med school cause his dad donated $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

One of my friends had a couple of friends attending Creighton (One third year, one fourth year) and also had a friend that graduated from there a few years ago. He had all three of them pulling strings, got buddy buddy with the dean and still didn't get in. He had a 3.3 gpa, and a 18 on the DAt. So it isn't always who you know.

The Dean must have seen right through them.

I think Deans in general are pretty good at seeing through stuff like that. I think that money talks loud enough to blur their vision sometimes though.

I was rejected outright by a school that I applied to this cycle and I called my advisor to see if she could shed any light on the reasoning. (My DAT and GPA were higher than the average this school accepted last year).

My advisor called the Dean of Admissions directly and I ended up getting an interview out of it.

An advisor that is very involved in your application process can prove to be priceless.
