Hi all,

I have been currently working in the public health field for the past two years on international programs (family planning, HIV, maternal health) both research and practice for Hopkins and wondered if I stood of getting into a MD/PhD program - there are severeal in epi/public health including Hopkins and Columbia that I'm interested.

I graduated in 2004 undergrad with a 3.8 GPA from a good school and only took general chem (A- both semesters) and physics (C the first semester bc i was a freshman and enrolled in honors physics my first semester at an engineering school with rocket scientsits and than a B second semester when I swithced out to th regular physics class). I also have AP Physics credit. I took General Bio I and II at a CC (it was the only schedule that fit in with my grad school courses and was cheap) and got two A's... then came Organic. I started working full time and tool organic in the evening which is a nightmare esepcially after a two hour commute. I got a D+ in Orgo I and a B in the lab. I then took first semester over and got an A. I am currently in Oragnic II and got a B on the first test (miraculously) and am doing fine on the lab so I should pass! I also have an MPH in global health and MA in international affairs (dual pogram) and international health field experience doing reproductive health education at a clinic in Thailand. I obviously want to go into public health/international medicine. I am taking the MCATs in June.

Do I stand a chance assuming I do well on the MCAT?

3.8 GPA, two masters degrees, and extensive research experience coupled with a decent MCAT will make you a competitive applicant. Do you have any basic science research? If not, you might find some MD/PhD programs that will let you do the kind of research you have experience with. I'd post in the MD/PhD forum and see what kind of answers you get. You seem like a unique and motivated candidate and that plays well...just be sure you really want to do MD/PhD, and know the answer to the question "why not just MD or PhD," both for your interviews and your own sanity.
