I got a confirmation from Hopkins saying that they have my secondary and will notify when my file is complete (with LOR's etc.) but I turned in my LOR's almost a month and a half ago, and still no complete file notice! Anyone in the same boat as me? Or anyone who has received a complete file notice??😕

Call JHU and ask. I returned 16 secondaries, and 3 of those schools didn't get my LOR the first time. At least one of those 3 just mis-filed them (that's what I paid $75 for, right?). Hopefully, you have a letter service, which means it's not a big deal to send another packet--believe me, your pre-med office will be used to this. Good luck, and get used to disorganization in admissions offices ...

premed,

I live in Baltimore and sent in everything approximately three weeks ago and haven't received anything yet. I wouldn't worry since their office is probably so backed up with applications.

thanks for the advice.....i think they're just behind with the apps

premed2, I still advise you to call and ask. For all 3 schools that didn't get my first set of letters, I waited the specified time (usually 4 weeks) before calling, assuming they were just backed up. At two of those schools, I did not get interviews (although I'm sure there were other factors). The point is, if they don't receive your letters within a week or so of your app, it looks on paper like you've been nonchalant about getting your letters together. Hopkins DOES take a little longer than most schools to send confirmations, but you won't be making a pest of yourself just to call (during the specified call-in hours, of course 😉 ) and verify that your letters arrived. Good luck!

thanks..ill call...last time i called tho, they said they are not able to check specific app status cuz of all the apps they receive. ill try monday tho, thanks!!

I wish JHU has an online application status check site like some other schools. It'll make everyone's life easier 🙂

I was so sick of JHU by the time I was done applying--the obnoxious phone policy, the slowness, the refusal to publish an e-mail address, etc. I got an interview really late in the game (Feb), but when I showed up, everyone was SO NICE and down-to-earth. I had pretty much written it off but totally fell for the school once I visited. (Oh, BTW, you CAN get an outright acceptance, i.e., not off the WL, from a Feb interview--lots of people from my interview group were at Second Look.) Anyway, hang in there. 🙂

I agree with VW; among med schools, Hopkins makes it hardest for you to keep track of what's going on with your application, but when you do call or visit, they are really nice and accomodating (and the interview lunch is one of the better ones! 😉 😀 )

And don't freak out too badly if you haven't heard anything. I got that first "we got your secondary but not your letters" email, but I still hadn't gotten a confirmation email about a month after I sent my LORs in, so I called during those hours to see what was up. That's when I found out I already had an interview, and they were just sending the offers out. I even got to schedule mine on the phone! (This was late August last year)

So, even though they won't tell you about it, they really are working for you. 😉 Of course, it is always a good idea to make sure your LORs get there, so give them a call during their call-in hours to make sure everything is squared away, and if your application is in this early you should hear something in the next month or so!

regarding hopkin's obnoxious phone policy.. i totally agree with this, their receptionists are real jackasses. I think Hopkins has fallen on my personal ranking of schools i want to go to just because of the snotty nature I get from them on phone.. that's NOT the kind of people you should hire to answer phones at your med school, whether you're Hopkins or Howard.
I sincerely hope the MDs they put out at Hopkins are more people friendly than their admissions staff.

Hi -

Everyone agrees that the admissions staff could be much friendlier on the phone, and that this simple gesture would make all our lives easier.

Bear in mind though that there's much more to a school than people who answer phones. If you were to attend Hopkins, you would never see these people again.

Don't let a bad experience on the phone sour your impression of a great school.

does hopkins have specific office hours during which we can call to see if our application is complete?
i found the phone number at their website, but couldn't find the call-in hours

The call-in hours last year were something like 2-4 MTuW ... if you call the number, the recording will tell you. I know exactly how you feel, Cantal, but if you interview at Hopkins, I think your impression will change considerably. That's what I found. 🙂

i called hopkins today to check my file complete status, and this is what they said,
"I'm sorry, our applicant pool is too large to be checking individual files right now. You will receive an email from us in the next two weeks or so if your app is or isn't complete."

You would think for such a first class institution, they would have an on-line status check! What's the deal here?

Yikes...sorry. That *is* really frustrating. 🙁 Maybe they are getting a lot more applicants this year than they usually do. Last year I didn't have any problem checking up on my status.

An online status check would definitely be nice, though in my experience they aren't usually any more helpful than giving the office a call. I had to call a couple schools last year when my online status check said "incomplete" when in reality my letters had just been misfiled or they forgot to update the site. 🙄 It seems to be a fact of life that med school admissions offices are utterly disorganized. Must be all the mail they get.

i called today too, and they said the same thing.....they're backed up and haven't had time to process anything. just keep waiting for an email

Yes!

premed2 & rCubed, sorry to hear about this. People at Hopkins really are nice, although you wouldn't know it from the secondary application process. Hang in there. 🙂
