Hey All! 🙂

New to the forum, and was wondering where I stack up against the rest of the crowd. I've always dreamed of going to HMS or Hopkins for med school and eventually going into neurosurgery. 😀

I know that they're very competitive, so I don't have my hopes up. 😳

Anyway, my stuff:
1) Princeton Undergrad
2) NY Resident
3) 42S MCAT
4) 4.0 Science GPA; 3.95 Overall (Darned economics!)
5) Great LORs, including one from one of the top cardiothoracic surgeons in the country
6) All summers spent in Peru helping medical service organization
7) President of a few clubs here and there
8) ER Volunteer (~100 Hours)
9) Shadowed cardio and ortho and internal medicine docs
10) Two publications (Immunology stuff): one is 1st author
11) Classically trained pianist and tuba player
12) PBK

Again, I'm keeping my hopes high but expectations low.

Any help or advice you guys can give would be really appreciated!

(AMCAS has been processed, and I'm currently working on secondaries... Harvard where are you? 😛 )

Thanks!

wow, thats a godly resume.
whats PBK though?

i almost want to laugh. it's too good to be true and... it probably is true.

Phi Beta Kappa. I think some people on here said its supposed to be a really prestigious honor society of some sorts. But perhaps someone else can give you the specifics about what the organization is about, etc.

Wow, your chances are certainly better than mine...congrats on the stats. I'm severely jealous, though we're not comparable anyway. I certainly hope you're not applying to any of the schools I'm applying to.
What was your major? How on earth did you manage that 4.0 science gpa?

Btw, with Harvard, it helps to have connections there...I know several very outstanding candidates who were unceremoniously rejected last year....and the ones that were accepted had all done post-bacc prgms at Harvard or had worked in affiliated hospitals w/ H profs.

I think you'll definitely get into JHU though.

So true.

To the OP:

I'm pretty sure you know that your chances are excellent, especially considering you are already at a top IVY league for undergrad. I hope you aren't being serious by actually thinking you need advice from us on this issue.

Thanks for all those quick, encouraging replies! 🙂

PBK= Phi Beta Kappa
It's an honor society that dedicates itself to lifelong learning, especially the liberal arts. Kind of selective to be accepted as a junior.

My majors are molecular biology and philosophy.

Hmmm...

1. Proficient use of multiple smiley's despite first post on board
2. "Neuro" name rings a bell...
3. Hoping to be a "Neuro", but having shadowed four other fields and not neuro seems strange...
4. Seems far too "perfect" of an application for the lack of confidence...

Altogether, I believe you are lying to us. Good job on lowering your stats a bit from perfect to seem more real, though.

Huh?? 😕

Normally, I can spot a troll. But this time I'm not really sure if the person is being real or really is a troll.

*cough*troll*cough*

But hey, its always fun to start a "Who's gullible tonight?" thread... Right? 😀

1. Trying to be friendly
2. Not sure what that means...
3. My father is a neurosurgeon
4. I've been told it's a crap shoot

Sorry if I made anybody upset

I don't see any sports in your ecs. Medical schools might wonder if you are a team player?

otherwise decent application.

If it weren't for your misstep with the tuba, I'd say you'd be set. Unfortunately now that you've already submitted AMCAS and that info is out there, you're screwed.

My god, man... the effing tuba?!? 👎

😛 Yeah, the tuba is a little odd... I went to a parade when I was little and when the sousaphones (a marching tuba) marched by I was in awe. So, I begged my parents for lessons, and they eventually caved (4 years later!). It's a supporting role, but I love adding richness to the orchestral timbre.

Anyone else instantly think "Her Majesty's Ship" when they see HMS instead of Harvard? And then I can't help but think of silly guards w/ funny hats marching around in circles...

And dude, if you're telling the truth, then sorry, but that is one heck of a breakout thread. It's on about the same level as me asking if I'm qualified to work at McDonald's.

You justify asking us if you have a chance, with that unearthly record, because you've been told the process is a crapshoot? If it IS a crapshoot, how are we to tell you what your chances are based on your stats?

In short, why did you bother posting?

That's a good point... I've never been blessed with any athletic abilities... best I can do is foosball. 🙂

Because that could have been heresay... wanted advice from a larger sample size to be sure.

Unless you hauled a foosball table via donkey down to those underprivileged folks in Peru - all while playing that tuba of yours - you’re a selfish foosball playing jerk.

You sound like an absolutely perfect fit for Princeton's medical school. I'll bet that many of us here on SDN would be willing to chip in and pay your tuition.

😀

Actually, when I worked with the kids we were taking care of down there, the only "game" they had was a 1000 year old foosball table (half the guys were missing legs, and were replaced with broken toothbrushes). But that's where I learned how to play.. but sadly, no tuba in peru 😛

To be honest, when I applied to their undergrad, I had no idea that they didn't have a medical school. But they promised that had an "amazing" premed department, which for the most case has been true.

Everyone knows that Princteon is just a bunch of sherry-swilling yacht monkeys. "Amazing" department my crack... You folks might be able to out-tuba most of the rest of us, but we all know that you'll never really amount to much.

And I bet most of us here on SDN could smoke you at foosball with toothpicks for our guys legs!

You should be embarassed to call yourself a tiger. Grrrrr.

I don't know if you are a troll or not, but if you are being real..........

I'd say you know that you have a chance at HMS and Hopkins, considering your background and stats and ugrad institution, etc. without talking to us.

Come on guju - there's no way this is for real! Its very kind of you to play along though, just in case! 😉

I don't think we should overlook the overarching joke that you are screwing with people on a pre-med message board in the middle of the night, and that THEY are subsequently clowning on you. This could be the nadir of your 42Sing, princeton-going, tuba playing sweetness.

This is probably my biggest problem with SDN. People coming on here with their 42 MCAT and almost 4.0 GPA thinking they are hot **** and asking stupid questions that they already know the answer to. Yeah, we all think you are the greatest ever! Now go away and stop calling attention to yourself. And the tuba sucks. And I hope you don't get in anywhere.

^^
if you're trying to strike a vein of funny... well dig deeper. your "where will I get in" thread was enough to be right under the line of arrogance, but this is going overboard.

and if you're serious, well then you must be eating hippo grits for breakfast.

First of all, this thread is a joke. Second, my post is almost an exact replica of what someone said to me, and I think it fits well here also. And no, I'm not serious.

Disregard the response I had a few seconds ago. I deleted it after I saw something.

I will hear no more insinuations about the German people! Nothing bad happened!

you're not even amusing. waste of a joke attempt.😴

Haha, I'll value your opinion as long as it's not that I can go to hell. But seriously, this is one of the lesser trolling efforts I've seen. It's just a little too over the top. I mean, all that research, volunteer work, letters from top cardiothoracic surgeon, etc... If I was the one conducting this trolling session I would do one of two things: 1) make the application a little bit more believable. or 2) ask a more outrageous question. (How about: I know my application is amazingly impressive, does anyone know how many full-ride scholarships Hopkins gives? I don't think I would attend a #2 ranked school unless they really sweetened the deal.) But that's just me, this isn't bad for a first effort I guess. What ever happened to SquatNSqueeze?

Germans? Did I miss something?

OK, OK. Just submit a copy (official seal and registrar's sig required) of your transcripts to all of us, and we'll believe you. We'll even let the MCAT and tuba slide without proof 😀

EDIT: OK, I take that back. I want a copy of a tuba performance too. My music collection seems to be lacking in the tuba.
