I'm coming to JHSPH for graduate school and I'm having an awful time finding a safe, nice place to live that has furniture and secure parking available. Places close to restaurants, shopping, grocery stores, etc would be best.

Any recommendations for apartment buildings would be greatly appreciated! I can spend up to $1300 on rent and I know parking will be extra. Thank you!

When I was a student there I lived in Reed Hall, which was housing for students in the medical programs including nursing and public health. Adequate for single students (not couples/families). I lived in an adjoined suite (there were 2 sides, each side with 4 students, so total of 8 of us), we each had our own room. Each side had a small kitchen area, bathroom/shower and we shared a large living area space with couch, table, chairs and two refridgerators.

I felt safe there and never had any problems, esp since it was card access only and there was always someone at the front desk to check ID/visitors.

I'm glad that I lived there since a number of other students had safety issues (breakins etc) when they lived on campus. If I had to do it all over again, I would still choose to live there.

Disclaimer - it is across the street from the emergency room...so that might take an adjustment, depending on what floor you're on and how much you can hear an ambulance 🙂

A ton of grad/med students live in the 929, which is right on campus and literally less than five min walk from Bloomberg. Parking in the 929 garage is $120/month, I believe.

In Mount Vernon (which is more fun) a lot of people live at the Standard or the Waterloo. Both are close to the JHMI shuttle stop which brings you straight to the medical campus, ~15min drive.

A lot of people also live in various houses/apartment complexes in Fell's Point, which is a direct ~10min Circulator ride to campus. People mostly live in rowhomes (though there are apartments) so you'd probably have to check the off campus housing website for listings in Fell's.

I don't really know of any students living near Homewood (though I'm sure they're out there) so I can't offer suggestions in that area.

Hope this helps!

Note - Reed Hall is in a great location but is now closed.

We don't **** around in charm city.

Kill or be killed.

OP, look into Fells Point, Upper Fells, and Canton (especially if you have a car). You can get a furnished place at 929, but it's small and not worth what they charge.

The City that Reads. So says the bus benches. I did love living there when I did, however.
The benches say "Greatest City in America" now 😀

thank you! i'll take a look in those areas 🙂 i agree that 929 is small for what they charge, though it would have been nice to be with other hopkins students in one building. if they had any one bedrooms left, i might have reconsidered it

I currently live in MT Vernon (about 1.5 miles south of JHU undergrad campus....is that where you will be?). its a great area and, I hope this isn't an offensive term but what I have heard people call it, "gayborhood." its super safe, lots of ethnic resturants. less bar hopping but on the free bus route to fed hill. I live at Horizon house which is cheaper than the standard (same managing company). I would highly recommend Mt. Vernon.

Fells, upper fells/butcher's hill (to, but not including, fayette) is safe but mostly rowhouses. Fed hill is much more of a bar hopping still in college feel. Canton feels, to me at least, a but older and more classic blue collar neighboorhood.

Love baltimore. only will live here for a year (trading the safe streets of Bmore for the safe streets of NOLA. my goal in life is to live everywhere david simon makes a show about).
