So I was all set on going to Hopkins as I selected PTE last week when I got the call today from NYU.
I'm interested in academic medicine and leaning towards the surgical specialties though I am still obviously open to everything at this time.
Hopkins
Pros
- Reputation/prestige translates into an excellent match list
- Awesome hospital system, seems like it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn in JHH.
- True Pass/Fail, with no internal ranking (AOA is reported after matching)
- The college system seems like a great way to socialize and build camaraderie with fellow students
- The vibe I got during the interview day was awesome: students seemed to quite relaxed and friendly, as did the administration.
Cons
- Cost (No financial aid at all, I'll be using loans for tuition while my parents cover cost of living). This will land me ~220k of debt.
NYU
Pros
- Tuition-Free
- Pass/Fail (Unsure about internal ranking)
Cons
- Not sure if it will open as many doors in academic medicine as Hopkins (I know NYU has a great reputation on its own)
I'm also not sure how I feel about living in NYC. It was cool when I visited for the interview, but I get the feeling that I'd get sick of it after a couple of months. I worked in Baltimore last summer and it wasn't too bad, I don't think I would mind living there for four years. My family also lives in Maryland so I would only be about 45 minutes away from my family at Hopkins.
Thanks.
