So I was all set on going to Hopkins as I selected PTE last week when I got the call today from NYU.

I'm interested in academic medicine and leaning towards the surgical specialties though I am still obviously open to everything at this time.

Hopkins

Pros

- Reputation/prestige translates into an excellent match list
- Awesome hospital system, seems like it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn in JHH.
- True Pass/Fail, with no internal ranking (AOA is reported after matching)
- The college system seems like a great way to socialize and build camaraderie with fellow students
- The vibe I got during the interview day was awesome: students seemed to quite relaxed and friendly, as did the administration.

Cons
- Cost (No financial aid at all, I'll be using loans for tuition while my parents cover cost of living). This will land me ~220k of debt.

NYU
Pros
- Tuition-Free
- Pass/Fail (Unsure about internal ranking)

Cons
- Not sure if it will open as many doors in academic medicine as Hopkins (I know NYU has a great reputation on its own)

I'm also not sure how I feel about living in NYC. It was cool when I visited for the interview, but I get the feeling that I'd get sick of it after a couple of months. I worked in Baltimore last summer and it wasn't too bad, I don't think I would mind living there for four years. My family also lives in Maryland so I would only be about 45 minutes away from my family at Hopkins.

Thanks.

Can you get Hopkins to match? If not, NYU could be the better option

It's looking unlikely. I emailed the admissions committee to ask about merit-based scholarships and they basically told me that they give a very limited amount of merit aid, and it's not guaranteed every year.

Hard decision. Staying close to family is good, but is it worth 220k to you? Hopkins and NYU both match very well.

If you're okay to pay back the loans I'd choose Hopkins.

Personally I'd choose NYU. NYC is an awesome city and you might enjoy it more than you think.

academic medicine doesn't pay well, so it may take you more than few years to pay 220K loan (which is probably 330k+ with interest).

One of the concerns I had with NYU is their match lists - it seems like a sizeable proportion stays in NYC for residency, which is something I'm not interested in doing. Is it likely due to individual preference, or is there some other factor keeping them in NYC?

That's just personal preference, NYU has an established name now and the cost difference between the two schools is way bigger than the prestige difference.

I think you would be crazy to think the reputation gap between Hopkins and NYU to be worth 200k (pre-interest). Even in surgical academic medicine. Unless its Harvard residency or bust for you. Also, NYC >> Baltimore
