I thought I saw a thread like this, but did a search and could not find it. Any information/comments would be appreciated (other than the location factor, which is not a big concern for me).
thanks!

i have to agree with captainjack. i've partaken in a few of these myself, but this **** really is getting boring. look at their curriculums (Penn's is unique in that you only do 1.5 years of basic sci and take boards after 3rd year), research opps, finances, the usual. great choices. you can't go wrong. throw a dart.

good luck. (and congrats, of course)

hopkins.............PLEASE!!!!!

Hey dr. lilee!

In all honesty, knowing how much I want to go to UPenn, I would tell you to go to Hopkins, but I will not. Go wherever you will be happier. They are both phenomenal schools. Did you get a vibe at either school? Look at the cost. I think Hopkins would be cheaper but it depends on your financial aid package at Penn. Would you rather live in Philly or Baltimore? Do you want to be close to family, and, if so, which is closer to family? Where would you like your residency (albeit you can get into a top residency coming from either school, but you have a better shot at getting a residency at your medical school)? Hopkins would win slightly in the reputation area, but UPenn was the first med school in the US and is great. Look at the curriculums. Do you like more lecture-based or more small-group learning? Do you feel comfortable squeezing 2 years of basic science into 1.5 years? Just write a list of general things you would prefer in a medical school and rank it. Then compare the two schools using that criteria. Revisit both schools if you can. Talk to current students at both. I wish you the best of luck with your decision. It really is a hard one. :luck:

Also, I think it's important to consider the 3rd and 4th year atmosphere, since we applicants tend to overlook it since it seems so far away (and our student hosts/guides are usually 1st or 2nd years). Rumor seems to indicate that Hopkins works their med students VERY hard (you can do a search about this in the Allo forum, it's pretty recent)... I'm not sure what it's like at Penn. I think Philly beats Baltimore anytime, but I think it's really hard to turn down Hopkins b/c of the name.

Congrats dr. lilee! What a great dilemma.

There is a tremendous amount of BS that is posted about Hopkins on these forums... I do my best to debunk it, but the SDN rumor mill is alive and well.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about Hopkins -- feel free to PM me at your convenience.

Cheers,

Not to try to trump doepug or anything, but feel free to PM me if you have questions about Penn. Everyone around here knows I'll give you the "real deal" without excess cheerleading.

Dear OP,

This is one of those decisions you only get to make once in a lifetime. If you choose wrong, you could wind up sleeping in a gutter in Tiajuana having just prostituted yourself for Heroin. If you choose wisely, you will probably be the dean of a prestigeous medical school, and have a trail of young'uns in short white coats, long white coats, and everything in between. You should stress yourself out about this as much as possible, and lose some hair and/or sleep over it. This has the secondary benefit of making you look older and deliberate, which patients dig.
