I'm writing a paper on the cultural norms in American culture and how we as a society believe health care should be provided to everyone, regardless of age, sex, and race (whether it is, is another question) Anyways I know that if you're having an emergency you are admitted whether you can afford it or not. What is the name of this law? Does it have a name? I'm just trying to reference it in my paper.

Excuse my ignorance.

Thanks and Thanks!

Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA)

They should call EMTALA the Close Local Hospitals Act.

exactly. No, a hospital doesn't by the letter of the law HAVE to do more than examine and stabilize, but how often do you think someone is kicked to the curb after that(Blesbok)? Reference panda bear's articles on EMTALA...

It's called needing dialysis, unfortunately. In NYC, we have patients coming from other countries and going STRAIGHT to the hospitals knowing that we are, by law, required to put them on dialysis once we find out they need it.

Dialysis is actually paid for by everyone through Medicare. Some interesting history there, but would take too long to type up in this forum.

Original Poster: You should address whether everyone ought to get medical care regardless of ability of pay, and how those who are able to pay do so (eg. income tax/FICA-esque? empoyers pay? mandatory insurance?). You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who'll argue that Asians deserve less health care than Whites simply because they're Asian. The idea of creating a financially solvent system while ensuring access is much more interesting (and difficult).

But you have to qualify for Medicare. Not qualified you are thrown into Medicaid which is governed by each state for qualifying purposes.

I came close to dialysis 5 years ago.

My daughter had a patient refuse dialysis even with a reading
of under 10% for a GFR during her junior year of rotations. The attending told the patient to get out of the hospital that he had no time for patients who would not accept help. Told the patient he would read her obituary in the paper next week.

Nice bed side manner.

lol thanks to this thread i got an extra question correct on a test i just took today. i would have no idea w/o this thread since there doesn't seem to be any info on it in our given study materials. 😀

probably doesn't make up for all the questions that i was clueless about though 😳

What else was the doctor supposed to say?
