Has anyone had a hospital internship over the summer or something or shadowed a doctor? How did you get the gig? And what kinds of things did you do? Just curious, thanks for your help!

Did a RISE summer program at Boston University Medical School......mildly competitive application process in Feb/March for June/July research internship.

I have not interned at a hospital, but I have shadowed doctors. I think the best thing for you to do is contact the hospitals and see what programs they offer. Perhaps you could start by volunteering and that would make it easier for you to meet the right people who you could either shadow or help you find someone to shadow. From others, I've heard it can be hard to find doctors willing and able to take on someone to shadow them- so keep trying and contacting doctors until you find someone. It's a great experience, and I learned a lot from being able to see their day to day responsibilities.

1) Go to the websites of the various hospitals in your area. Many have pages dedicated to volunteer opportunities, high school student internships, etc.

2) Regularly view the employment opportunities page for the hospitals in your area. Although you may not get a clinically relevant position, getting a position in the hospital can open doors to other opportunities in the future.

3) Talk to any physicians you know about shadowing them or if they'd provide information on other physicians you can shadow.

4) Google search for opportunities at various medical schools. This can often involve an application process and be time-consuming, but if you're truly interested in medicine, you'll have a lot of time-consuming application processes in the future. 😉

Good luck!

Where do you live? Depending on what hospitals are around you, you might be able to snag a clinical internship specially for high school students (one example is the COPE Red Shirt Internship). The way I did it was by starting out as a hospital volunteer at a large county hospital, and moving up from there--after I volunteered for a year or so, I asked if I could shadow a couple of docs, and lo and behold, it worked 🙂

I didn't necessarily get a hospital internship in high school, but I did volunteer at one and found it to be a highly valuable experience. Do a little searching online at the hospitals in your area and see what kind of programs they offer. As for shadowing, I haven't done any of that because the hospital I volunteered at didn't allow it; however, simply calling or emailing or calling a doctor that you're interested in shadowing would be a good start.

This isn't really specifics on a hospital internship BUT EMAIL A LOT OF PEOPLE. Be kind and make sure you tell them why and what you want to do. I emailed a professor/research director at the university I want to go to and just said I wanted to get some research experience and want to assist with their research project over summer. She replied to my email and asked me if I wanted to come in and talk to her a little bit. When I went to talk to her, she offered my a spot in her research project for the summer! Learned a lot of things and most importantly, made connections! Before I left, she asked if I wanted a LOR and invited me back next summer! It all started with an EMAIL!

Just snoop around and find people! I emailed about 40 profs with the same thing, 1 replied! Just gotta try!

Hope this helps and good luck!
