Is it true that people who graduated recently, and people who will graduate in the future, realistically can't land clinical pharmacist job without doing residency? Also does anybody know people who worked in a hospital for a couple of years and THEN did residency?

You can get a clinical job without doing a residency. Some require one, but not all.

It depends. Do you want to be a a clinical pharmacist the second you graduate? If you so you will have to do something in order to gain the necessary experiece to do the job. You are in no way prepared to be a clinical pharmacist when you graduate. The only preparation is experience. You can gain that experience by working in a hospital for a few years or you can get it by doing a residency.

There was a job posted here in my town for a clinical pharmacist in a 450 bed hospital. One of my staff pharmacists who has a BS in pharmacy wanted to apply for the job. They told him without a PharmD he would not even be considered. Keep in mind this is a guy who has been a pharmacist for over 25 years. Then they told him without a residency he would need 5 to 7 years related experiece in order to be considered.

No...I don't think that is true. There are places which will hire you without residencies - I think it is market related & what the actual job entails.

No...I don't know anyone who worked in a hospital then went on to a residency, however, I do know one person who worked in a hospital then went onto a fellowship in nutritional support & critical care. That person, however, went on to medical school after that then became a pediatrician....so take it all with a grain of salt.

It's up to the candidate....if you have clue.. you'll get a job.
