I am currently working my small project about computerized hospital pharmacy management systems and I need your inputs. Could anyone here who works in the the hospital tells me a little bit about the computerized pharmacy management system that you're using now? Such as: name of the system, where to look up that info, etc...Thanks a lot....

Computerized Medication Delivery System:

Pyxis, Med-Select, Acu-Dose, Omnicell

Cardinal owns Pyxis, McKesson owns Acu-Dose, and AmerisourceBergen owns Med-Select. I've installed all 3 at different hospitals.

Pyxis is still the cadillac of the industry.

This is a lot more complicated than a simply project. These system must interface with pharmacy order entry system which keeps the medication profile.

There are many of systems out there but one of the more popular system is called HBOC by McKesson.

Then there is the Bar Coding system...

Then there is the order scan system like Pyxis Connect.. or Med Direct... Omniscan..

I agree with Zpack - Pyxis is the best & HBOC is great as well.

The computerized dispensing system needs to interface seemlessly not just with the pharmacy database, but also with the laboratory database & patient demographics.

For pharmacy, particularly.....you need to get the movement of patients rapidly - if your pt moves from ICU to a medsurg unit or vice versa....you need to get that info when nursing inputs it - not just when the info gets to admissions/records.

I've only used Pyxis & Omnicell - Pyxis is easiest, but still has problems with multiusers requirining medications in short periods of time - OR for example. Omnicell is better for materials management - IV fluids, dressings, tubings, etc....

Also...First DataBank is the largest provider of pharmacy data for both inpt & retail I think. (Its also a great employer for foreign graduates!!)
