I had a internal medicine practice for 20 years. 5 years ago, went into full-time administration. I would like to get back into a full time hospitalist position. However, it has been 5 years since I admitted to a hospital. I have kept up a small part-time clinic practice and just re-boarded in IM.

Want to know the best way to get re-trained to cover the 5 year gap in hospital work. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure that i'm the best person to offer advice on this, but perhaps doing some moonlighting hospitalist shifts at a community hospital might help get your feet wet?

I can't imagine that you're that far out of the loop since you've kept up some degree of clinical work throughout the 5 years. And I feel like 5 years is not that long, especially if you were in full-time clinical practice for 20 years before the hiatus. That knowledge and skill doesn't just disappear.

I'm certainly not the best person to answer this, but many groups hire PAs to assist their hospitalists. Perhaps a group would be willing to have you take on a PA-type role on a temporary basis before transitioning to the MD role?

Thanks for the excellent above thoughts. I also found some courses at UCSF that look interesting with their 1 week Hospitalist Progam.
