For those of you who stayed with student hosts when you interviewed, what did you do to thank them? Buy them a meal, give them some kind of small gift...?

Thanks!

I've always just offered to take them out for dinner. Most of them decline and may even cook for you. At VCU the admissions office suggests a small gift, but I've always been clueless about that. What are you supposed to get someone you don't even know???

The only time I stayed with a student host, I got her a nice basket of stuff from Bath & Body Works. (I think it's easier to shop for generic girl gifts anyway.) You could always go with a gift card or something like that, I don't know.

I brought them See's, if I tried to buy them food most of them turned me down, I think bringing something works out better because they can't turn it down. And with chocolate even if they don't like it they could share it with their classmates.

I agree that taking your student host out to dinner the night before is nice. When I was interviewing, I thought that med schools were all reimbursing my student hosts so I never bothered to give them any financial compensation beyond sending a thank you card after I left. It's not required to compensate your student host with a gift or by paying for dinner, most do it because they like the school and are generous people, but it's still a nice thing to do.

I took my student host at Penn to dinner at a pretty good chinese restaurant (its called beijings,,,,mmmm). So long as you don't break the bank, I think a meal or a mini-gift is appropriate....but so is a simple thank you note!!!

I always took about 4 or 5 nutrition bars like Balance or Luna. They all loved it and often bought it on a regular basis. It's great for that energy boost before an exam.

Wow that was quick!
I had been leaning towards buying dinner, but I might arrive rather late, and since a lot of you said hosts don't accept dinner anyway, I guess I should bring a small gift.
Thanks for all your suggestions!

took em out for dinner and drinks drinks...and yes some more drinks.

i think my student hosts really liked that since it was a good way to just chill from school.
