Endo and ortho are certainly not dying.
Natural teeth have periodontal ligament that can be used to sense texture of foods, contain cells that interact with osteoblasts and osteoclasts that can be utilized in remodeling of bone for orthodontic treatment. Implants are like ankylosed teeth, where that PDL is no longer there, and so they cannot be moved once placed. Endodontic treatment extends the livelihood of natural teeth and maintains the integrity of the PDL. Endontic treatment is often more affordable than placing implants, and can buy some time where patients save up for an implant. Many doctors still refer out complex endondontic treatment. Our endodontist is booked for weeks.
Many of our periodontal patients seeking implants are referred to our orthodontist to idealize their occlusion and arch since once implants are placed, they remain in their place. Orthodontic treatment is ideal treatment for many, and so, it will never disappear. We see new patients every day and maintain a thoroughly busy practice.
Unfortunately, many generalists are not properly trained in orthodontic care and so even though more possibilities are open to them nowadays, such as Invisalign, they may not achieve ideal results. Patients feel most comfortable in the hands of a specialist with regards to their orthodontic care, and many will pursue those specialists for treatment.
