I was just wondering what you guys thought was better or if any of you had experiences with either...is it better to stay at a hotel or overnight with a med school student host? When you live with a med school student is it usually at a dorm that is walking distance to campus or is it in some apartment that might be kind of far away?

Thanks! 😀

I suggest staying with a medical student. They'll be able to tell you more about the school than you'll find out all day at an interview. My student hosts also gave me tips for the interviews. I definitely felt more confident after staying with a student.

I would expect most of them to live on or at least close to campus. Good luck with everything.

I'll be staying with Students whenever possible. I figure I'll get a better picture of the school and also save some money.

At my school, there are a bunch of us signed up to host incomming students. I'd imagine it's cheaper than staying at a hotel (but I don't know... I know I don't get paid hotel rates to put someone up). Plus, you'll be able to get a fell for the type of people at the school, and you'll be able to talk to someone who is not being paid to advertise the school to you, but rather someone who is paying tuition to go to the school.

That's just my two cents.

There's a tradeoff there. I can tell you from my own experiences that you definitely can get a better feel for the school and what the people are like, and how they live, if you stay with a student. That said, the one time I stayed with a student, there was a party going on all night outside his apartment and I got somewhere between 2-3 hours of sleep. There's no telling if or how that affected my interview day.

I would say earlier in the week, say Monday through Thursday interview days, you shouldn't have much of a problem staying with the student. Things should be pretty quiet. Friday or Saturday interview, though, you'll definitely want to make sure the student lives in a peaceful part of town.

Me, personally, as a reapplicant, I don't really care any more which school I get into, I just want to get into any school, and I figure I maximize my chances of doing so if I'm well-rested for the interview day. So, hotels for me. And if I should actually have a choice between schools, I'm sure I'll be able to get in touch with some students there, and find out what I need to know.

it depends on what kind of person you are. if you get nervous, then you should go to a hotel and sleep. if you are chill and you can handle night before jitters, then go with a med student......they will give you tips, tell you about the school and faculty, maybe their friend will be interviewing you the next day (stay with an MS2 if you can), and make you relax (once you realize med students are nothing special), etc.

How do you find out if you can students will host applicants during interview stays? I am pretty sure that the three schools I have heard from (Pitt, Vandy, UMich) all just mention close hotels. I think it would be a lot of fun and am always looking for ways to save a buck. Thanks for any insight!

im going to stay in hotels when practical, but in places like NYC, i think ill try to stay with a student just so i can avoid any headaches.

In most of the cities where I applied to schools, I have friends or family to stay with. In those that I don't, I'll stay in hotels, just in case the student host I draw is a bad apple or big partier. I dont want to take any risks, I'm a grouch when I dont get enough comfortable sleep!

Well, I know Pitt gives you a list of possible hosts and some information about them. Just go to the site where you scheduled the interview, and look on there.
