I am looking for a hotel that is close enough to walk to campus. Any suggestions?

If anyone has stayed with a host, how did that work out, and would you suggest it for Vanderbilt?

Thanks,

poor fool

I recommend the Guesthouse. My parents always stay there when they visit me. It's the cheapest hotel around campus, and they have a free shuttle service that you could take to the interview. It isn't quite as nice as the Hampton, but breakfast is free and they do some tasty Belgian waffles.

I stayed with a host and definitely recommend it. My host had a guest bedroom for me with my own bathroom. He picked me up, took me around campus, and spent over an hour talking to me about the school. We then cooked dinner together. It was a very cool experience. I think FireX stayed on someone's couch and he had a good experience too.

Thanks for the help. I think I am going to try and stay with a host, but I am going to be pissed if I have to sleep on the floor.

Stay at the Wyndam Union Station. It's totally sweet, especially if you can get on the 5th floor. Ask for the government discount (they are really nice over there), and you'll get an awesome room in a very classy hotel for 80 bucks a night. A free shuttle will take you to Vandy, or anywhere else you want to go (you might want to check out the Finch art museum - small, but a lot of choice pieces).

Anyway, enough rambling - it was nice, and definitely a good experience.

If money is not a factor stay at Lowes Hotel it is right across the street from Vanderbilt University

I don't work for the government. How would I get this discount? Even if I did, I don't think I can afford 80 a night.

They're really nice - and anyway, technically, if you have a part time job at a public university you're a government employee.

definately don't stay at the days inn. it's not walkable. there aren't many hotels right next to the med school. the closest hotels are the lowes and the holiday inn. if i were u i'd stay with a host. most of the med school peeps are cool and have decent pads. just call him/her up and ask what u need to bring. but u'll also get to meet some people so that's what i'd do.

If you decide not to stay with a student host, try the Days Inn Vanderbilt on West End Avenue. It's very close to the main campus, a bit farther to the med school, but totally walkable. It's less than $60 a night, I think.

The hotel's link is:

(I'm still waiting to hear from Vandy 🙁 )

I stayed with a host, and slept on a couch. 10 minute walk to Light Hall. I would think given the cheapness of living in Nashville you could get a host w/ spare bedroom or futon or something (as a poster noted above). Would always always always recommend getting a student host unless your privacy or personal prep time is an issue. They give you the inside scoop, might buy you a meal (or you them), and will probably get you from the airport/bus station/train station/hot air balloon station.

I just hope they match me with a cool dude or dudette.

The Hampton Inn and Suite is a good bet; they have a vandy medical school interviewee discount (although i think that's for residents, but oh well). For ~80 you get a good hotel and they have a pretty decent breakfast in the morning. Make sure it is the one on elliston street b.c there is another hampton inn i think that is a bit more shady. Oh and you can walk to the Parthenon park where they have an exact replica of the parthenon!

does anyone know if that matching process with a student is based on anything or is it random? Just curious b.c some of the people i interviewed with had hosts and others didnt...

There is a form you can fill out on the website. It is entirely the choice of the interviewee

I stayed here....highly recommended

I'm researching hotels for Vanderbilt for my interview now. 🙂 I don't see why you think the Days Inn isn't walkable; it's the same distance away from Vanderbilt hospital as the Guesthouse, 1 block farther than Hampton Inn, and 3 blocks farther than Loews. I suppose it depends on your idea of what is walkable; some people may not be able to do 0.8-0.9 mile (the distance of all these hotels) the morning before an interview. I think I may go with the Guesthouse after all, because they say they have a shuttle to the hospital. Student host isn't possible for me because I'm bringing along the boyfriend for this one.

(I'm certain JDAD has made arrangements already. This is for posterity!)

HAHAHAHHA, you over-estimate me. I haven't booked anything yet. I am going to just wing it! I have my light booked, but I haven't booked a hotel. I fly in around noon and I will just walk around until I find a hotel. I want to explore the area, so I figured this would be a a great way to do it. I have my new suitcase now, so I won't have to worry about carrying around my stuff in multiple containers.

I'll let you guys know how it goes. I just hope it doesn't rain too hard, maybe I will pack a few garbage bags to cover my suitcase just in case. I also muct purchase an umbrella, I don't think my north face ski jacket will go well with my suit.

What a wild & crazy guy. But just to let you know, if you book the Days Inn online, it's only $46.50. I think I may actually go with that, since the next cheapest is the Guesthouse (same distance) at $72. It's not too late to book!

Thanks for the help. I will look into that. Internet prices are always lower, and 50 bucks a night is decent. Good luck finding a place.

eh. that area has a lot of hotels, but i doubt you are going to find anything cheaper than days inn west end (which is where i stay...got it on expedia for around 65 bucks). Before I went to Nashville, I had always imagined the area to be full of honky tonk bars 🙂 (Hahha...never been south of Virginia, so forgive me 🙂) The campus area is actually pretty quiet.

(oh, another plus with Days inn: free wireless internet)

From first hand experience, I actually don't recommend lugging your stuff around. It rained the whole time I was there, and the garment bags can get quite heavy. Make sure you take your bags to the admissions office in the morning. You can leave them in the application lounge and leave from the medical center right after you are done.

what happened to staying with a host? I really think that's not only the most affordable but also the most informative. I think i'm going to try that for all my interviews. How much ahead of time do you have to arrange that?

Great minds think alike. I booked the Days Inn about an hour ago. I got a prety good deal, $45. It even has a shuttle just incase it's raining. I planned to drop my stuff off on interview day, but prior to booking the hotel, I was just going to walk around until I found a place. I'm pretty tough, and I think I could handle carrying it around for a while. Thanks for the concern though. I am sure the Days Inn will work great.

Psych, I tried to stay with a host. I submitted my application but I never heard anything back. It's a voluntary progam, and there isn't a gaurentee that you will get it.

OK, I originally recommended the Days Inn, but I have since read some scary reviews of the place online:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...Vanderbilt_Music_Row-Nashville_Tennessee.html

I have travelled through Europe & Asia and have stayed in some places that were complete HELL (the worst was me, a girl, staying by myself in a TOTALLY HORRIBLE 6-bed dorm room where some scary & drunk guys were also staying). But I feel like I'm getting too old to stay in horrible places. So someone has stayed at the Days Inn-West End Ave & can confirm that it is decent?

Or is it me back at the Guesthouse Inn & JDAD (maybe) walking around in the rain with all his stuff in garbage bags?

HA, too late now. I had to cancel by four o-clock this afternoon. I will let you know how it goes on tuesday night.

I'm not scared!!!!!!

$46 bucks is a deal for that area, I will just sleep in light hall if things go bad. Either way I don't really care. It will just look odd when I pull down my pants and start peeing in the plants.

EDIT: Wow, just read the reviews, if my room stinks, they are going to have one bitter JDAD running around that place. I can deal with old stuff, but stinky and dirty, not a chance.

Nah, it's not too late. When they say cancel by 4pm, they mean the day-of, I think. Anyway, good luck to you, man. & do let me know how it goes. 🙂

I survive that trip. didn't have anything scary to report. except that my room overlooked a scenic...er...strip club.

I was highly amused 🙂

welll..... maybe if you went to vandy for school, you would know ;-). I don't think that Days inn is walkable cuz even though the school is 3-4 blocks from it, you have to walk across campus to get to light hall.... so... BLAH@! ;-)

The Days Inn is in the same area as the Hampton Inn & the Guesthouse, so if people think those places are walkable, then the Days Inn is, too. To get to the hospital from those hotels, I would probably go down West End and then take a left on 21st Ave (no cutting through campus). Loews is 3 blocks closer, and the closest is probably Holiday Inn ($92) since you can cut across campus to get to Light Hall.

BLAH! I'm walking!

or... you could stay with a friend.... if u went to vandy ;-)

Virilep is right, and I am wrong. The Days Inn may not be walkable, even if you are tough.
