You should really try to find some people who do this regularly in your area and with a similar fellowship background, even if they've been out for a while. If your ONLY income is part-time private, you really need to look at the numbers. In addition to the benefits issue you need to pay taxes -- most employers take that out for you, but if you're working as a contract employee they may leave it up to you. And you need to have an idea how many hours per week you'll be working, how many cases, etc. If you're only working 10 hrs/wk then $120/hr isn't going to look very good after taxes, health care, dental, bills, loans, and retirement planning. On the other hand, you're interviewing for a part-time job, presumably early in the career, so you can't expect the "typical" income of someone on annual full-time salary.

Thanks for the feedback. I have only interviewed at full time positions thus far, and wasn't sure about what to ask for part-time work. This position opened up in my geographic location, so I wouldn't have to move my family. Position is part-time (25-30 hours per week) and could become full time within a year if I wanted.
I think a more resonable way to look at this would be compensation to total RVUs (certain people may get minimal work done in terms of an hour while others may get much more done)

Now if you know how much workload you will handle in your part time position (no. of wRVUs-measure of clinical productivity e.g. 1 biopsy sign-out has a wRVU of approximately 0.80 or so).
Hence ask the employer to give you an estmate of the wRVUs per day expecpected (all semidecent practices have these figures), per month or per year and you can give an estimate of total compensation you expect.
Lets say you have 10,000 wRVUS/year.
A median compensation would be 35.80x10,000= $358,000
Lets say you have 100 wRVUs/day in your part time job.
A median compensation would be 35.80x 100= $3,580
Ofcourse, *****/loser/lowlife employers will try to low ball you as much as possible, so that they can have more money at your expense so they can go and do nonsense stuff (aka play golf).

I love it. Demand 3,500 a day for part time work! That is like 350 an hour. Now that's a plan!

If ones want to become a multimillionaire many times over, one has to learn another more profitable business (while keeping the steady stream of income from pathology). In the internet age, the opportunities of making such money are limitless as long as one has the entrepreneurial spirit.

It would help to know what the full time rate for a pathologist in your area is. I've spoken to recruiters for locums position. The salary ranges have been from $75-100 / hr. Some will also offer housing & travel expenses on top of that. They'll cover your malpractice.
Keep in mind that if you make $800 / day ($100 / hr), it equates to about $200K / yr if you're working full time. In my area, that would be considered pretty good for a young pathologist.
