Both MadTV and SNL fluctuate over time. New writers come in, new actors come in, things get better, things get worse. All shows like this also lose their best actors (i.e. Bill Murray, Will Ferrell, etc) because they eventually transition over into film.

It's interesting because the actor who plays House in this parody is actually a very good actor and should be at the point in his career when he's offered numerous film roles, but I haven't seen him in anything recently...

Anyway, sketch comedy has to toe the line pretty carefully. If you're too ridiculous, you risk losing your audience; if you're too obvious, people don't think it's funny. Similary, if you're too offensive, you risk the show getting cancelled; if you're too PC it's boring.

I love comedy, I love writing comedy, but I would never write comedy for the general public. It's just too stressful and constricting.
