To fellow incoming students,

Where are you guys going to live? In the university apartments or off-campus apartments? Also, which university apartments are closest to campus?

there are student housing at mission bay, which is kind of far from campus. or you can check out craigslist for housing around ucsf

There are university apartments around the main campus on 3rd and 5th ave. The earlier you submit the application, the better chance that you can get a single room in those apparatments.

UCSF owns some houses around the main campus but you have to share your room with 2-3 other people. According to one employee "Those are hard to get and the university doesn't advertise them." "Mission Bay Apartments" are 60% occupied but those apartments are not close to the main campus.

Mission Bay Housing Monthly Rental Rates:

Studio (351 SQ FT)..........$830 - $1180 (one bathroom)
1 Bedroom (562 SQ FT)....$1280 - $1580 (one bathroom)
2 Bedrooms (720 SQ FT)..$1720 - $2020 (one bathroom)
3 Bedrooms (971 SQ FT)..$2430 - $2480 (two bathrooms)
private room in a four-bedroom apartment (1084 SQ FT)....$755-$830

*Electric (PG & E), cable or satellite TV and telephone are paid by the tenant
**Internet access charges are included in the rent for one leaseholder (i.e. a family or a single student). Two leaseholders in a two bedroom unit will require an additional $15 per month per leaseholder, to be included in the rent
***Water and trash/recycling removal costs are paid by Housing Services

I am living in one of the university appartment now and there are few new units underconstruction, right behind the dental building. There are single rooms available but the catch is that you have to put down your move-in day early, like june 1st. Otherwise, you have to compete with the pharm and medical students for the room.

I didn't know anything about those apartments. How do you know what is available and when it's available? Are you sharing your apartment with anyone? The housing people in room 102 only told me about the university owned houses around campus and the mission bay apts.

Once I filled out the housing application, the housing manager called me and scheduled an appointment with me. Then, she showed me a list of rooms that were available. I chose a double room, sharing with another student, to save some money. In fact, there were more single rooms than double rooms at that time. The appartment that i am living in is not that bad: 4 students, 3 rooms, and 3 bathrooms.

For the new appartment units, the available day is still unknow since it is still underconstruction.

Thanks so much. 🙂 Do you know if the Kalmanovitz library is open 24/7 ? Is any room in any of the UCSF buildings accessible to students 24/7 ?

No, the library is not open 24/7. Otherwise, the homeless who lives in Golden Gate Park would have moved in. Please correct me if I am wrong, to my knowledge, none of UCSF buildings are accessible 24/7 for students.

shinji, when are you moving into the parnassus apartments?

it looks like housing on mission bay is easier to get in.
is it too far though to commute from mission bay to the parnassus campus?

i think it's a 30-min shuttle ride from mission bay to parnassus. i wouldn't recommend commuting to ucsf, it's hard to find parking, unless you want to pay $23/day at the parking structure.

mission bay apts are near the oakland bridge on the far east side of San Francisco. UCSF is near Pacific Ocean (i.e. the west side of San Francisco). It's at least a 30-40 min shuttle ride plus the time it takes to wait for the shuttle. *Parking is $2.75 per hr.

hmm.. ok. forget about mission bay.
did everyone already submit the housing application?
i thought there's still plenty of time to look for a place.. guess i was wrong..

i haven't secured housing myself. does anyone know a good time to start looking?

Doesn't school start on Sept 18th? I thought you are a 2nd yr student.
No, I am an incoming D1. As long as you have a provisonal acceptance letter, the housing office will let you apply

checking the housing website, it says there is no availability for new applicants. how'd you get in?

Just like UCSF admission office, they rarely update the website.

Fill out an application and turn it in ASAP. The worst case is that you won't get a room in the university appartments and there is no financial charges for submitting an application.

shinji,

i was wondering why you moved in so early? is it to secure your spot? i'd love to do this also, but don't really have extra money.

Many people are moving in on June 1st so it is quite hard to get a room in the university appartments around campus. I put down May 1st and the manger called me in April.

i stopped by the housing dept. and changed my move in date to aug 1st. i hope this would increase my chances. they did say availability changes weekly and they call you based on the date you wanted to move in. so even if you applied in january, they wont know of availibility of sept until sometime in august.

i applied online for on campus housing today.
the only option available for the single student is to live in a shared house though. Shinji, did u move into one of those houses or is it one bedroom apartment?
is the situation same for off campus housing? should i move in around june to secure a place within walking distance from the school?

That's exactly what I was told but Shinji said it's not true.

These are the rates for the university owned houses near campus (near Parnassus):

2006-2007:

Double Room:
$395
$458
$467

Single room:
$560
$596
$659
$667
$694
$712
$745 (STUDIO)

I moved into a house which i share with 3 other students.

I believe there is no one-bedroom apartment available except for the mission bay housing.

shinji,

how's parking around there? do you have a spot.. or is it a "free for all" situation? (assuming you have a car)

It's not hard to find a street parking but a residental parking sticker, J zone, is required. Otherwise, you will have to move your car every two hours in the weekdays.

just curious, do these apartments stand out from other non-UCSF affiliated apartments? i've been around the area often, but never really know which ones they are.

No, they just like the non-ucsf affiliated ones.

Shinji: i take it you're living on 3rd avenue?

3rd and what cross street?

food4thots said:

3rd avenue, between parnassus and irving. That's the prime place to live. Very short walk to school. They also have housing on 5th avenue, which is prime as well, especially since it's close to the dental clinics building.

wow.., you can pretty much wake up 10 mins before class and still make it on time.. i hope i get in.

I live at mission bay right now and am moving out this weekend to be closer to campus. Honestly, the only positive thing for me was the gym here. Aside from that, I can't wait to move. So, anyone wanting to finish out my lease/start theirs at mission bay, pm me. I live in the cheapest 1 bedroom here ($1280/month), and I believe that this type of unit is hard to get...any questions?

any roommates? that's pretty pricey for a single student.

bad news about parnassus housing.. the housing coordinators say the chances of getting it is very slim.

Anybody interested in sharing a 4 bedroom apt? Tossing the idea around. I know an apt on 4th avenue (very close to school), that will be available soon.

Reven I might be interested. How many baths? Rent? pm me

is it male only, female only or unisex?

I'm male and it doesn't matter to me if co-ed or unisex. 4 bedroom, 2 bath, between irving and lincoln, on 4th ave. Was 2 males, 2 females in there, w/ the females sharing one bathroom, males sharing other.

A few other people have pm'ed me that they're interested, so looks like we have enough interested to fill the apt. It's still an idea at this point, but I'd be willing to meet up/talk to people that are interested, so we can see if we'd be compatible as roommates. I am living in the city at this time. PM me if you're interested or want to talk over the phone.

Dave
