Hi, I'm going to be working at Beaumont Hospital for April and am looking for an apartment or a room to rent that is near the hospital or on a bus line. Not sure if it's better to live in Dublin 2 and take the bus or in Dublin 9 and walk. Any advice would be great!
Thanks!!!

Generally a good rule of thumb is to stick to the even numbers (they are on the south side). Dublin 2 is smack in the center of the city, and will be more expensive. Not saying the south side doesn't have its dodgy areas, but the north side has a bit more. D9 is santry, a bit harder to get into town should you want to explore and go out.

Thanks for the advice on living on the south side. Which bus is best to take- 16, 16A, 20B, 51A, 105, 128? Or are there any shuttles that go from the Dublin City Centre RCSI to Beaumont?

Also, in Ireland, do you wear scrubs in the Emergency Department and will these be given to me when I arrive at work?

Thanks!

Beaumont is actually on the North Side(odd numbers) so I'd throw anything around O'Connell Street(D1) into your search as well. People usually take the 16, 16A, or 128. There's no dedicated shuttle.

Business atire and white coats (lab coats but thicker material) are the med student uniform here, even in the A+E (Accident and Emergency). You'll be offered scrubs in the operating theatre, but as soon as you leave its back to shirt and slacks.

Where are you coming from so I can give you a few tips on additional skills you might need here?

Any advice for finding an apartment? I have not seen much on daft.ie. Or anyone have an empty room that they would like to sublet?

I'm coming from the US so I will be bringing a stethoscope, a pen light, and a few reference books. I am going to see if I can find a long coat, but otherwise I will just bring a short one.

Thanks!!!

Don't worry about getting a long coat, no one will care if you are wearing a short coat (I have seen many visiting students wearing short coats before). The best bus to Beaumont is the 27B (it drops you off right in front of the main entrance). There are a lot of students who live in the IFSC area as it is very convenient for getting the 27B.

Thanks for the advice on which bus is the best and which location is good.

Is there someone who I can email who would email the RCSI class to see if there are any students with rooms/apartments to rent to me?

Also, do students work on Easter Monday?

Sorry I don't have an extra room. If you're still having trouble get Student Services at RCSI to send out a mass email on your behalf.

In general A&E runs with the same level of staffing all the time so it will just be a matter of finding the Consultant on that day and telling him/her who you are and what you're doing there. That being said, I'd doubt anyone would fault you if you had to take Monday off for some reason.

Also, I'm not sure about your med school, but if you haven't been taught nursing procedures like taking blood and ABGs, I'd look over those as they like to have med students do that here. I know in Canada its not really taught.
