For those of you going in the fall or who are already there. What are you doing or planning on doing for housing? What are the university apartments like? What areas are you considering renting in?
Thanks for the input.

I;m looking at Craigs list, LA. And I'm thinking of calling and seeing if I can get my student ID number so I can use the UCLA housing office.
If your going to UCLA then you should list yourself on "class of 2006". It helps to know whos going where because maybe we can help each other out.

Well, I just finished grad school here and am staying for med school as well. The grad student housing, if you can get it, is reasonably priced and reasonably nice. However, the wait-list is usually in the hundreds. I don't live there, but the people I know there got their places by being very persistent. A side note: the grad housing is not really that close to campus, it's several miles south.

UCLA has a housing website with community listings, but it's pretty weak. The best I've found is westsiderentals.com. There is a fee, but its worth it...also, if you can find someone else who already has a password then you don't need to pay🙂 In fact, I think I can get one from a co-worker if people want it.

As far as area...westwood is fairly undergrad infested and very crowded...most grad students here live in west LA, Santa Monica, Palms, or Mar Vista (the last 2 are generally less expensive). There are also several people who live a little east of campus in the hollywood/fairfax area.

I hope that helps, if there is anything else you want to know, just ask.

Hey Vin,

I might just be interested in that password. I'm looking at a July 1st move in date. Since you live in LA any chance you'll let a future classmate crash for a few days while she looks at apartments. 😎

For starters, I'll e-mail/pm you with the password when I get it from my co-worker. Any idea when you would want to come down here to look?

hey vin,
do you think you might be willing to pm me the password too?

i unexpectedly got in to ucsd, so i'm hemming and hawing again, but my gut feeling is i'm still coming to ucla. i'm going to be out of the country most of july, so i'm planning on looking for a place at the end of june and hoping i can work out some kind of lease where i don't have to pay for july... we'll see..

in any case, other ucla med-ers, where abouts are you planning on living? do people drive to school if they live farther out, or is driving around there a total hassle?

thanks 🙂

From what I know, med students, if they want to pay, are gauranteed parking (as opposed to us Public Health people, who had to lie about where we live...or so I've heard). There is also the big blue bus that runs around LA and to UCLA that UCLA students can ride for free with there ID.

i went to undergrad at UCLA and all I can say is DO NOT LIVE IN WESTWOOD, unless you want to pay outrageous rent and stay up all night listening to drunken frat boys in the streets.

i'm going to UCLA for med school and am moving elsewhere in west LA. it is true that they will guarantee you a parking space (at about 450 bucks/year), so there is no need to live in walking distance of the school if you have a car. Palms is reasonably priced but slightly less safe--it's near the 10 freeway and national. I'm probably going olympic/robertson area which is slightly cheaper than westwood and much nicer.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions about living in LA. see you in class 🙂

I live in LA right now, work at UCLA, and am vacating a fabulous 1brd in Hollywood on July 1st. We have currently fashioned a 2nd bedroom in our gigantic living room so the rent is REALLY cheap, but it's not horrible for one person either. It's a 20 minute drive to UCLA (straight shot down Sunset Blvd), but is in funky fun area of LA that's got tons more character than Westwood (while still being safe, clean, MUCH CHEAPTER, etc). PM me for the whole description if you're interested.

Hey Rhiana,
I did not know Craigs list had an LA link. Thanks!

Vin Scully,
I had a question. Sorry for the two posts in one. Did you find an apartment using westsiderentals yourself? Also how much are the graduate apartments and where in palms are they?

BTW,
From my own experience Caliboy is right. Living on the Gayley side of campus where fraternity row is would definately be a mistake as a graduate student. It is super congested, and expensive.

The graduate apartments are definitely a little cheaper than the market, and as for where they are located...if you know the area...there are several locations...on Venice east of overland, on Sepulveda just north of Venice, and there is a third location west of the 405 that I'm not sure of.

And yes, living right off campus around Gayley is a nightmare...

Tekno and Rhiana, check you pm, I sent you guys the westsiderentals info...

I wish I can start looking for housing too... 🙁 Sucks to be waitlisted.
