Housing in Philly

I already posted my adds in the classified adds(housing section ) on SDN & also on UPENN students site but I got no response till now ,so I decided to post it here .


As a matter of fact I have been searching soooooooooo .... many sites regarding housing in Philly & for a long time .Here is what I concluded :

It will be hard for me to find a sutable place ALONE, without sharing an appartment due to the prices .I am just posting here to see if any of the PASS pals ,or (someone from the DDS program ) is intrested in sharing an apt near the school .


I am 30/M & I would like to share with:

- Serious hard working fellows .
-Non smooking .
-My budget is 500$ .
-Gender : no problem ....................wait !!!!! (someone straight for sure ).
-I am a good cook........................(ONLY WHEN I HAVE TIME ) .
- Your NDBE-1 + GPA +TOEFL= not importent .

it indicates prices too. they have almost all the apartments available in philly. u can call them and see if the price, location etc. suits u.

i have stayed in philly earlier. the city is definitely nothing to write home about but its not too expensive- cost of living is low.

in philly you do have trains but its much better if u have a car to get around.

and as far as i know, UPenn is not in such a safe area...so u might want to live a little away.

Thanks a lot for the two links , I never had them befor .Actully I prefare to rent near the school in order to save (commuting +car expenses + more importent ....TIME ) .

I do not think that the safty of the area arround the school is a big deal ,cos so many students rent overthere.It is just that I need a good partner in order to be able to rent near UPENN .

just thought I'd tell you that due to lack of parking space UPenn actually DISCOURAGES their students and staff from coming in their own cars.....yes the area near UPenn is not so safe but I think the school has some arrangements where by they send some one with u in case u r late.....which area in the WORLD is safe today pals?

Thanks GPG🙂 . I was not planing to bring my car anyway , and I wanna find the closest housing to the school . Even if it was not safe near the school ,what should girls then say ???

I said that my budget is 500$ only ,cos after I made my calculations from the expenses list they gave us , I figured out that I should not spend more than 500 bucks for rent .

Sam, I asked around for you.. all the ppl I know joining (male AND female 😛) are planning to rent out studios and live on their own. Its always nice to have a roomate... but have you considered a studio as a second option? You might have to spend more than 500 tho..

Dr_Pablo and I have found an apartment (she did all the work, God bless her), its close to the school and of a reasonable size, and we have to pay around 700 per head.. incl of heat, water & electricity.. so be prepared to cut down on some other part of your budget to make allowances for rent.

Have you heard of The Courts apartments? They're REALLY REALLY nice.. I've been there.. I have 3 friends at Drexel University who share a 2 bedroom apartment, and it works out pretty well for them.. the third one stays in the living room, and pays less rent than the others. They pay a lot less than 500 a head... its may be a little less comfortable than having your own bedroom... but its another option.

When I was there, a lot students just rented a room in those big houses right by school on spruce and walnut street......I just don't know how you would go about it, though. I guess you will know people once you get there or else ask the existing PASS students if you know any of them...???

also remember that apts near the school are bound to be more expensive even if the area isnt great. its close to downtown i suppose. upenn is in west philly which is just beyond downtown. (goes without saying that many downtown areas are not safe- eg: houston downtown, philly etc.). this is my opinion only!! 😀

we stayed near rittenhouse street which is quite a distance away from the schools (both drexel and upenn) and my hubby drove to drexel. its not a great area either and i wouldnt recommend it. it took him like 10 minutes in the early morn and 30-45 minutes to drive down in the evening rush hour traffic. keep that in mind before taking an apt too far off too. philly traffic in rush hour can be bad.

the nice thing is there is an international foods and spices store pretty close to upenn campus (walnut street)- which makes it nice and convenient to shop for those spices after school! 😀

Sorry for the late reply , it is just these final tasks that I have to deal with ,which keep me so busy .

Actully I also prefare to have my own plase without sharing ,but due to the prices I asked about sharing .Anyway, if I could not find a sutable rent in few days ,I guess I have 2 increase my limites to 700$ .As you said befor , you cant find all what you need in the SAME appartment (there will be allways something missing ) .

I wanna be as carfull as I can in choosing the housing ,coz if I signed a one year lease.............thats it .

Regarding the courts apt , did you check there prices ........... a studio for 1000 $. NO WAY for me to pay this price .I will be in Philly on the 10th & will do my best . I allready printed out many availabilities through the net & will go check them ASAP .

Hi Dr.Kpat :

Actully those big Vectorian houses are my first choice . As I said to Tasha , There is allways something missing .For example ; if the place is perfect in ALL aspectes ..............it might NOT be available till June or July .Thanks a lot for your concern😀

I really hope u find a decent place to stay.......may be u could speak to one of the UPenn students and ask them....also I don't know whether this will work but u cud place an ad in one of the local daily papers.....some one might be out there in ur position looking for a pardner......keep us posted what happens....

boy if I wud have been in UPenn I wud have surely stayed with you.....or may be not....for I would have had to cook beeryani all the weekends.....just kidding.....may be next year.....all the best to you while u r on the verge of starting one of the most important phases of your life!

Actully ,I do not prefare this Idia .If I am going to share with anyone ,I prefare someone from the dental school ONLY(I mean someone hard working & serious about school ) .Some students enjoy their life and have a lot of fun during their study years .

For example : if my rommate wants to smoke weed or invite his friends to spend all the night drinking& having fun(which might be more than normal to some students ) , I can not loose my school due to him .As I said , if i could not find someone , I will raise my budget up to 650 $ and have my own place .
