I have applied to SUNY and PCO, and waiting at the moment, I just wanted to know when the students usually move in before class starts, is it like a week before or so. Do most students room together or just with random roomates where they find a place?

When you get accepted to PCO they send you a link to a housing webpage/board where you can hook up with other 1st years interested in sharing housing.

I'm planning on moving in early August, just to have a few weeks to settle in before class starts.

hey r_salis,

are you going to PCO or SUNY? Where in Maryland are you from?
I use to reside in Rockville, Maryland, now I have been in New York for ten years

Greatone -- I've been accepted to both PCO and SUNY, and it now looks 99.9% certain I'm going to go to SUNY. I live in Howard County, but now it looks like my husband and I will be moving to NYC!

So have you interviewed at both schools? Which is your first choice?

hey r_salis,

I just got accepted to SUNY, yeah baby, so now I am probably gonna cancel my PCO interview, SUNY is my first choice, I am about an hour and a half away from the school

Congratulations, greatone!!!!
Are you going to move closer to the school, or commute from where you live now?

Thank You r_salis,

I want to move closer to the school, preferably within 30-40 min of the school, and no more than an hour door to door.
I live out in the suburbs. The city or Queens which is like 20 min from the school is a good place. I hear a lot of the students live there since the rent is a lot cheaper than in the city. I don't know about you, but I am real nervous about the classes, a lot of hard work but should be exciting and lots of fun.

I've heard that a lot of students live in Brooklyn or Queens -- from Brooklyn, SUNY is a straight shot from one of the subway lines (the 6, maybe?). I met a couple students who actually live in Manhattan -- you can get a (tiny) studio for around $1,000, if you want to live in the city and don't mind living in a small place. I think it would be exciting to live downtown for a few years, plus it would be nice to be so close to school since we're going to spend a lot of time there!

I've heard the 2nd year is the worst in terms of the material and the time spent -- taking classes, practicing procedures, and studying for boards. The 1st year is going to be really tough, too. I can't believe the number of credits we're taking. I can't wait, though, it's going to be hard work but you're right, it'll be fun, too.

good luck with your decision r_salis.. let us know what you decide!! And yes, it is a lot of work... but I really do enjoy it. 😀 😎

Thanks, cpw! Things got really confusing for me in the last few weeks when my husband found out he was going to be transferred to the NYC rather than Philly office for his job. We were all set to move to Philly and for me to go to PCO until this happened, and then we started evaluating whether it would work for us (professionally, personally, financially, etc.) to move to NYC. It looks 99% certain now that I'm going to go to SUNY instead of PCO -- fortunately they're both great schools, so at least that wasn't an issue. Now I have to think about being a City Girl instead of a Suburban one... 🙂

Hey, I'm going to SUNY too. I'm originally from Brooklyn Heights, Ny. It's real expensive there because it is one stop from Wall Street area. I will be commuting for the first year but will probably want to find my own place after that. The 6 train doesn't stop in Brooklyn but the F does which is across the street from the school.

r_salis,

Its sad to hear that your not coming to PCO, but i wish you all the best at SUNY.

If you need any advice on where to live in/around NYC, just let me know. 🙂

Thanks, Christie! I really have mixed feelings about going to SUNY because I was so looking forward to going to PCO. 🙁 Everyone I've met from there has been so nice, and PCO's new curriculum sounds really great. It's been a really tough decision. 🙁 We're definitely going to live in Manhattan, we're not sure where yet, though -- where would you recommend? I like Tudor City (close to the school) and Stuyvesant Town (close to the east village, but quiet) a lot so far.

adw -- Yay, another SUNY classmate! 😀 I think I guessed the 6 train because it's the only one I ever seem to take when I'm in NYC. Needless to say, I end up doing a lot of walking. 🙂
