Hi SDN,

I have a conundrum I'd like some advice with:

I am so grateful to have an acceptance at UVM (in Burlington VT). I am a California resident and grew up near LA, currently live in the Bay Area. My heart has accepted that I will get a comfy jacket and move to Burlington.

I also interviewed at UCLA PRIME in January and was told in March that I was not accepted into PRIME and that my application has been "passed over" to the regular school of medicine at UCLA.

Two of my best friends (basically family) have a year to kill and have told me that they are both willing to move to Burlington with me. They currently live in southern California and they are both very excited about this move! As am I--we've talked about living together forever! (also bc I think it will help with being so far away from my support network as an M1).

The thing is that I could technically be accepted to UCLA still, and might not know if I am rejected until the very end of July. If this happened, I couldn't/shouldn't turn it down (more recognized school, in state tuition, close to family, would want to practice here in the future, etc.) It would be unreasonable for me to move to Burlington.

I would hate to have them quit their jobs/make plans to move if I didn't actually move to Burlington-- at the same time I would hate to tell them we can't all move together when it seems most likely that I will not be admitted into UCLA.

This is the timeline:

UCLA notifies me of decision by July 31st at the latest
UCLA orientation starts August 6th
UVM orientation starts August 16th

My friends would need to give a 2 weeks notice with their current employer, and attempt to find a job (preferably prior to relocating). Can anyone impart some wisdom here? Is there a good move to make? I'm under the impression that an intent letter to UCLA will probably do nothing for me, and there's no way I can ask them to "speed up the process".

Thoughts?

...you tell this to your friends. I'm confused as to the problem. Worst case you would move to Vermont 2 weeks before them (as they'd need to put in their 2 week notice once you know for sure).
