I'm tremendously blessed to receive acceptances from both UT-Houston and San Antonio. I just wanted people's opinion on where they would go and why? What have you heard about student life and the various curriculums? Which school is a better path towards oral surgery residency? Thanks for any advice you can give....

I had a friend who was in a similar position, and she chose Houston. I've heard some negative things about San Antonio in the past, but I dont know how far thats true. Might want to look into the older threads.

CONGRATS!!!! 🙂

Coincidence or fate, the San Antonio Spurs are playing the Houston Rockets tonight if that will help you make your decision. 🙂

If you're going for oral surgery, then San Antonio without a doubt. The chair, Dr. Ellis, is a legend, and historically applicants from SA are more favorably looked upon than Houston when it comes to residencies. I may be biased, but I'll keep it real. The stigma in Texas is that Houston is a joke, however it's still a good school in many aspects. Each school has it's pros and cons, just decide where you'll see yourself happier in x number of years. Put in the effort at whichever school you end up at inorder to specialize. Just PM if you have specific questions.

Wow, this is a funny post. The 'stigma' in Texas that Houston is a joke? WTF are you talking about. I have never heard such a thing. That said, how can you say that historically San Antonio applicants are more favorably looked at over Houston applicants. Are you a member of every OMFS selection board. I have known the last 4 years of applicants from Houston who applied to an OMFS surgery residency. Only 1 person that I know of didn't get into a program and most getting into a program they found very favorable.

You can say what you want about SA vs Houston, but it is hard to disprove facts - if you put the effort in while in d-school you have a very favorable chance of getting into An OMFS program if you attend d-school in Houston.

BTW .... I attended dental school at both SA in the 1990s and Houston in the 2000's. I am probably the only person here who can compare the programs. I refuse to say one school is better than the other because they both have their pros/cons that can easily make people want to accept or reject an accept over. Just because a school once had/has a reputation doesn't mean this applies to the student applying to a residency. If this is the case, then I would have never gotten into d-school. I went to a no name 4 year college in Idaho. I still got accepted into all schools I applied to. It didn't hurt my chances. The same thing applies to a residency. I don't care what dental school you go to. If you put the effort in, you sell yourself when applying to a residency- not the school (unless you attend d-school at Harvard).
