Has anyone had an interview at Loyola (Chicago) or even heard back from them? My application was complete a few weeks ago, but I haven't heard anything.

I actually received a letter of acceptance too within a week of the phone call. I really enjoyed Loyola, people really love it there. Their gym is freakin awesome too.

On a tangent, does anyone happen to know how Loyola folks do on their USMLE's? Also, if any current Stritch students are out there, how does your educational experience compare with what you have heard about other schools?

Not at all. My GPA and MCAT are rather mediocre. Loyola is a very service-oriented school and I've done a lot of volunteer work in the West and abroad. I also got along very well with one of my interviewers. He was the one to call and let me know I got in.

I was done mid october, called them twice: once about a month after completion and I called about a week ago. under review, still.

Do they leave a message, try back? I have a full time job and am not home during the day, and often I am off-site and unreachable at work. If they call and don't get a hold of me am I screwed until they do, or will they leave a message, etc.?

Just wanted to chime in with some info. The limiting step in the Loyola process is the interview invite. Some people get asked right away and others, like yours truly, have to wait a while before getting an invite. Once you interview, things move very quickly - they don't leave you hanging.

Loyola also has a very personal process. They often call to offer interviews (and they will leave a message if you're not home), the Dean of admissions meets with every interviewee, and it is not uncommon for interviewers to call you when you are accepted (this is not a policy, just something some of them like to do on occassion).

I don't know the stats on our board scores, but I guess were pretty average. People get into good residency programs so our scores can't be bad.

I don't know too many other med students at other schools, but I have to say that I am really happy with Loyola. They have a very progressive program that is execptionally student-focussed. We take our courses in blocks so that we can focus on one subject at a time. I like this because I don't feel like I have to prioritize what I need to learn according to which test is coming up. It's an intense way to learn, but everyone seems to be pretty happy none-the-less.

if any of you interviewed on a saturday, were you able to see/meet with a lot of med students? what's the day like?

I interviewed way the heck back in September. Yeah, Loyola seems to want to invite you to interview quickly if they really like you (especially if you went to a Jesuit undergrad university). I actually interviewed there on a Saturday the last time I applied (2003, waitlisted, no room for me) and I remember that there were a few students on campus, but not as many as when I interviewed on a Tuesday this time (2005). The one thing I noticed is that Loyola fills up their class fast! So try to schedule your interview ASAP because by spring (even early spring), people are usually interviewing for waitlist spots. Anyway, I got in this year. The school really is amazing. The people are wonderful and the nicest I've ever encountered at med schools. I wish more people knew about Loyola! Good luck everyone!

Hey there. I loved the feel at Loyola; the staff and students were exceptionally kind. I'm certain that they would offer a great educational experience and inculcate a service oriented approach to medicine.

I have some concerns and questions about Loyola. I'd like to hear from others who are strongly considering attending Loyola next year and current students as well. I'd like to know more about the housing options in the area. Would commuting from the good local neighborhoods be as much of a pain as I am expecting? Does commuting hurt the experience at Loyola? How strong are the clerkship years at Loyola? Do students gain a relatively large amount of experience and have the opportunity to work with reputable doctors? Would a student need to commute much to have a diverse and active clerkship experience?

What exactly attracts/attracted you to Loyola? What are its best educational qualities? On the other hand, what could Loyola improve? What is making other applicants hesitant to attend there next year?

I just interviewed there today, and that's what they said. The waitlist turnover rate was 11% last year, but has been 30-40% in the last 4 years. So here's hoping...

i don't think that's totally true considering i very recently got an interview invite and haven't interviewed yet; it appears that many schools tell different groups different things
...unless they are interviewing for their waitlist now...???

it is true; we were all interviewing for waitlist positions. they will keep interviewing for waitlist positions until march or something. the class just got full last week. the dean told us we will get a letter with one of three things: waitlisted, on hold, rejected.

When I interviewed at Loyola, the Dean said that 'on hold' was not very common, and meant the admissions comittee wanted more info before an up/down decision is made. So once you provided more info, you would go up again in front of the comittee.

I'd say most of us live in Forest Park or Oak Park and it works out really well. There's lots to do and the commute is short.

I'm about to go to bed, but I'll try to write out more thoughtful answers to some of your other questions later.

Did anyone give the Loyola admissions office a call today to check on the general status of things to validate this "class is full" business. I guess I'm holding onto self-delusion at this point and refusing to believe that there truly are no longer openings available. Any updates would be swell...

i think on another thread it was mentioned that people who interviewed the week after the last adcom meeting (i interviewed on 1.4.05 and the adcoms met 1.10.05 and i got my acceptance 1.14.05) were told they were interviewing for wailist spots...

anyway, best of luck to you all anyway! 🙂
