Hey guys,

I'm a new member here at SDN, I've been reading and e-stalking for a while, but I figured it would be a great idea to get some outside perspective on how I currently stand. So without further adew, here are my stats, feel free to (hopefully constructively) criticize everything you can. Thanks a lot! Oh, and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Anyway, here are my stats:
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
cGPA: 4.00
BCPM GPA: 4.00

Activities:

President of Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) (a LOT of time)
Events Coordinator for Nutrition and Health Awareness(2 hrs/wk)
Volunteer Leader for Project Cure (3hrs/wk)
MESA Elementary Science Club (2 hrs/wk)
Cancer Research Group Leader (10 hrs/wk) (more, but this is all we get credited for)
Worked summers at Cardiac/Cancer center (40hrs/wk for 3 months for 2 years)- here there was a lot of patient interactions, I showed them back to the examination rooms, got histories, vitals, took ECG's, checked pacemakers/Lupe recorders/etc, phlebotomy, and filled their billing
Shadowed interventional and EP cardiologist, oncologist, orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, ER physicians, pulmonologist (who just took a job at Harvard Med 😛), radiologists (gotta say, the gamme knife is COOL), and watched an entire 6 vessel bypass (7 hours!). Total time is probably close to 150 hours over the last 2 years

Anyway, sorry for the block of text. I think it is part of the premed mentality that we are never sure about our credentials, constantly doubting our CV, and keeping an eye over our shoulder for what others are doing. With that, I hope to have some peace of mind by hearing what you guys honestly think. How am I doing so far?

Thanks a lot in advance!!!

edit: my fault on the thread title, obviously it should be *far*

I'd say if its possible to fix that GPA, that would probably be the best thing you can do. Just make sure you get at least a 35 on your MCAT and apply broadly. Have you considered Caribbean schools?

I would say fix the title of this thread and you'll get into medical school okay "dar"

Hahah my bad, this was the second time I typed the thread as I was logged out while typing the first one.

Keep up the activities and GPA. Come back when you have an MCAT. 30+ MCAT and you'll probably get in.

Can't tell if srs.

I am serious, I know my GPA looks high but I've really only taken the pre-reqs, next semester I begin with my actual engineering classes so I expect my GPA to drop a bit.

Are there any other EC's I should look into, next semester I will have a lot more time on my hands (14 'real' credits vs. 20 each term so far) so hopefully I can invest them wisely.

thanks though

Make sure that you do well on your MCAT. I've seen plenty of people with sick GPA, who did fine on AAMC FL's, and then f up the real thing. Even with 32, you'll have to fight hard to get a seat at the top 20 schools (except for state schools, which you probably aren't looking forward to enter).

Will you be getting in some more clinical experience before you apply, perhaps spending another summer doing what you did for the past two?
Any teaching/mentoring/TA/tutoring/coaching to mention?
Don't forget to save a space to mention your hobbies, sports, and any Arts involvement.
Any possibility for publication or a poster/presentation with a noncampus venue?
Some shadowing time with a primary care doc, even if only for 4-8 hours would be nice to add to your list.

Overall, you've made a good start. Be sure that you use your leaderhip roles to accomplish good and make a difference.
