Hi,

Ive just completed my sophomore year of college and was was wondering if I could get some idea of how I'm doing so far. After a disappointing first semester my freshman year (3.2 GPA w/ one science class), Ive been able to get around a 3.6 or better my next three semesters, with a 3.75 this past semester. Overall my GPA right now is just over a 3.5. I know this is lower than the average for accepted medical school students, but do I still have a chance? As of right now, my only C has been in a comparative anatomy lab. I am currently doing research this summer, and plan to shadow and volunteer as well as review for my MCAT. I also compete for my school in division I athletics. Soooo, what does everyone think? Should I be worried about anything right now? Im hoping to bring up my GPA more over the next two semesters so it looks a little better. But what about extracurricular activities? Will athletics look good or wont it account for much?

Thanks

Kill your junior year and you'll be fine. I think I only had about a 3.3 after my sophomore year but was able to get it just under a 3.6 by the time i graduated. countless people on this forum didnt do well their freshman year (me included) and an upward trend will definitely help

athletics won't be enough. try to volunteer at a hospital doing something where you're around patients, shadowing doctors is good as well.

edit: I'm not trying to say athletics won't help, because they will. Anything that is time consuming helps because med-schools know you can manage your time. I had a friend that was in the school band and she woke up at 5:30 every morning in order to do it. doing something that time consuming on top of your coursework helps. but if you're busy during the semester don't worry about clinical work, you can get that experience over the summer

Division I athletics is a great extracurricular. Adcomms like to see evidence of teamwork. And that you maintained a good GPA despite the hours needed for your sport speaks well of your time-management. Getting your GPA more competitive is certainly within reach if you continue your current work ethic. I'd get that community service/clinical experience going ASAP so you have more than a year of each on your application (clinical volunteerism counts for both categories, BTW). It sounds like you've got the research lined up. If it works out well, perhaps you can continue with it through the academic year. A leadership experience is very desirable to have by the time you apply.

Just do well in the remainder of your classes and shoot for a 3.8 every semester.

You really need to volunteer in an ER somewhere a couple of hours a week. I found the ER to the easiest to get and most accomodating to my schedule. It is always open! Plus, you can see a variety of things. Just make sure the ER will let you do clinical stuff.

Do well on the MCAT! Obvious.

Your sports will be good but not replace things like clinical volunteering and shadowing.

Well, on the way, now you just need to close in the 4th quarter.
