How are interview invites sent out?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well I haven't heard anything from any of the programs I applied to and I'm coming from a top tier program (Cornell). I am a little nervous but I figure it's too early...at least I hope that's the case, lol.

it's definitely still early, especially if you didn't apply to too many. good luck to you! and since you mentioned it, any chance you know when your home institution will start interviewing? i really like Weill Cornell 🙂

I heard nothing after I submitted on the first day, then got interviews in the span of 2 days, and completely quiet again until rejection. This process if so random and unpredictable.

I haven't heard from any of the places I was really hoping to hear from, and they've sent out a lot of invites. I called a few of them yesterday, and they basically laughed at me and said just to sit tight because it's still so early, and they've only sent a few invites so far. Most of them said their interviews don't even start until late November, so they will be sending a lot more invites over the next 2-3 weeks.

Dude. Chill. You're the one who's posted receiving 18 interview invitations on the II thread. Anyone who has gotten that many already is fine, and likely should have applied to a good bit less programs. You'll hear from the remaining ones in the next few weeks.

Yeah I only applied to 15 programs (might apply to more if my inbox is still quiet by next Wednesday). As far as Cornell is concerned, I actually don't know when they will start sending out interviews but I do know they tend to take their time with the application process (at least that's what the program director told a few of us). GOOD LUCK!!!! 😀

Dude. That was the whole point of that post. That it's still early, and there's no need to freak out.

Our PD suggests we apply to 20-30 programs. But that's because we don't go to a "top tier" like Cornell 🙂 I'm sure the invites will start rolling in for you! Good Luck.

has anyone gotten sinai or nyu invites recently? is sinai still inviting? I know NYU might be :/

thanks for the reply! Do you know if sinai is doing batches or just rolling along? I'm assuming NYU is doing batches. This process is so frustrating!

for sinai, i assume rolling but i only assume that since there aren't a slew of "MSSM!" in the interview invite thread.

NYU? who knows.

Does any one know if Penn or Hopkins are rolling? This is an unrelated question, but how long has it taken others to receive an interview confirmation from Duke? Thanks.

I didn't hear from Duke for 4-5 days so finally I emailed to inquire politely. They said I got my top choice day but that the confirmation email must've gotten lost so they sent me another one. So just ask nicely. Chances are your email got lost too 🙂

Any idea how invites for the Harvard programs come out? I see a bunch of MGH's today and am wondering if there will be more later this week.

probably not. other top programs sent out a one time bolus, so I dont expect it to be any different with the harvard programs.

eh Duke's invites were rolling and UCSF.... i wouldn't give up hope just yet.

Anyone know what days BWH tends to interview? (Crossing my fingers that they do Thursdays, but I'm guessing probably not... Also crossing my fingers & toes that I'll get an invite).

When should one start making phone calls or send in emails to inquire about interviews/app status?

Now. According to my PD, the time is now. That is, if they've been sending out interviews already. If they haven't then it's inappropriate.

got upmc today and they have quite a few dates left. don't count them out yet!

I tried calling some programs. They weren't too interested in looking into my app. They just said they are reviewing apps still and they will let people know soon.

Has anyone encountered the situation where they actually asked you for your name to try and look through your app now or at a later time to really get things moving, regardless of interview or not?

Thanks man. I'm glad to see this. I thought I had a decent app but this year must be tougher (or I overestimated myself). At least I applied to 30 just in case this happened, but it never feels good not to get an offer to a place you are really interested in haha.

Withdrew from UPMC yesterday. Hopefully that opens up another interview spot!

do letters of interest matter? if so, send directly to the PD? too early or late in the season?

Are you talking about a "you're my #1" letter? If so, it's generally considered not a bad idea to send ONE letter/email to your actual #1 (it can be addressed to the PD or PC...it will get where it needs to go).

If you're talking about an email to a program that hasn't invited you yet, it's unlikely to make a difference, but they probably won't reject you just for asking.

This. Okay, thanks for answering.

This was correct for me! Sent one to a PD, no response, not rejected yet either.

I've sent out a couple. All PDs responded. Led to one direct interview invite, one direct rejection (UPenn), and several "thank you for your interest...we will be reviewing applications soon".

Did you do this soon after invites were sent out? I'm just wondering about the timing.

Any word on UChicago? They pretty much done? You gunner AOA guys thinking about dropping them after getting Osler, BWH and MGH?

I think it was about 1 week later. I didn't plan it like that - I randomly thought of emailing PDs for places that already sent out invites and it happened to be 1 week later.

I have been e-mailing programs too, but have been sending it to the program coordinator rather than the PD. I have never received a direct response, but did end up getting 2 interviews within a week of sending the e-mail.. not sure whether this was because of my e-mail though. maybe directly e-mailing the PD would have been a better idea?

After about 2 weeks of no news, I sent out a bolus of emails to my remaining programs, fully expecting it to make no difference. But in the last day or so, I've gotten 1 new invite and 2 emails saying all their dates are filled but that I am in the group that will get an interview if there are cancellations (don't know how true that is, but at least I didn't get completely ignored). I sent my emails to the contact address listed on ERAS, whether it was the coordinator or PD.

I suppose I can start gently calling program coordinators next week to maybe scrounge up another interview or two.

Nice. I may have to do this as well, besides getting a few rejections at the places that seem to mass-reject all at once, it's been super quiet for last week and a half of so... Thanks for the idea dude, aznb0y129 you are my hero. 👍

that's great! i unfortunately have not been so lucky: i emailed a few programs about a week ago- got automatic replies back from 2 (your standard "if you're asking about your app, don't, we're still reviewing") and the rest have been silent.

Been 50/50 for me.

Pitt and Vandy sent invites the next day, UofC and Penn did not. Penn actually didn't respond.

How about sending emails to programs that rejected you? Any chance it'll work?

What are you guys writing in the emails if I may ask? Just restating your interest and to know if your file has been reviewed/status of your application? Thanks.

Pretty much. I've been just stating my interest and stating that I'll be interviewing at a nearby program from __ to __ (or leave this out) and would appreciate any updates they had regarding my application. Keep it short and be polite!

I think the only way it might work is if you state that the program is your #1 choice and even then, it's pretty unlikely.

This.

For those of you who emailed Penn inquiring about your current app status, have you received a response?
