At my last interview, it felt as if my interviewers were tailored to what I had written in my essays. Do interviewers have any input or choice on what student/students they get to sit down with on interview day?

I feel like I had wayyyyy too much in common for it to be a coincidence with two of my interviewers at different schools...

At my school, it's random. We asked at the beginning of each semester if the scheduled time slot works for us. Rarely, a Faculty interviewer gets sick and one can be asked at the last minute to fill in.

I was at one school (I forget which one) where they said a description of each of us was posted in a spreadsheet, and interviewers would sign up, which I thought was interesting. Sure this varies a ton from school to school though.

At the school I interviewed at, it was most likely random. Had to reschedule and got completely different faculty at different times.

Of course it may have not been random and they paired me with people they thought I was interesting.

At one of my interviews, in the wrap up session with the dean at the end of the day, one of the students said that he was flattered to have been paired with an interviewer who was so similar to him and his experiences. The dean just laughed and said the process was all random. I feel we might say our interviewer was tailored for us just due to the nature of the field. At this point, most have done research and volunteer work, which allows for a lot to be discussed. I'm only very surprised if I'm partnered with an interviewer who is uniquely similar to me, say worked with a certain sub-population, speaks the same language as me, etc.

At my school we have no input into whom we interview, but I have shared similar interests with far more of my interviewees than random selection would suggest should be the case.

At one interview my interviewer founded the school’s special interest group that I focused on in my secondary essays. At my other interview the interviewer had just been hired 2 weeks prior and was asking me about the school for his own sake.

Some schools (like Hopkins) give faculty the option to choose who to interview as a way to build relationships and hopefully create productive conversations.

At my alma mater they chose individuals who matched my demographics which was so amazing <3. Most schools they just randomly choose.
