Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some feedback on my stats. I'm currently in the process of applying to dental school.

Overall GPA – 3.57 (3.6 with +/-)
Science GPA – 3.39 (3.45 with +/-)
BCP GPA – 3.50
Non Science GPA- 3.62
I'm just wondering if these GPAs are competitive?

I've also written the Canadian DAT but I'll be completely honest and say that I didn't really study very hard for these scores.
Reading Comp – 22
Biology – 17
Chem – 17
Science Total – 17
Academic Avg – 19
Perception – 18
Carving – 17

I'm writing the American DAT in mid-August and I'm hoping to get 21's across the board. Do you guys think that is too late to write it? Should I bump it up?

I will probably submit my AADSAS application and send my transcripts late next week. But again, my application will be held up because of my DAT scores. Should I just send my Canadian scores? Or wait for the American ones?

I know that it's preferable to have your application complete as early as possible. Do you guys think I'm applying too late?

I'm Canadian and I've made a prelim list of schools to apply to – I'm thinking – Columbia, New York, Marquette, Virginia Commonwealth, Detroit Mercy, Pennsylvania, Case Western, Boston, USC and Pacific. What do you guys think? Any suggestions for where I should and should not apply? Which schools are out-of-state/Canadian friendly? Is there any point of applying to Howard or Meharry? (I'm Asian Indian).

I would really appreciate any feedback that anyone can give. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, your current DAT won't cut it...especially to some of your prospective schools. I'd retake it and mid-August isn't that late.

You'll need to score higher on the American DAT for a shot at Pacific, Penn, and Columbia (I'm not sure which New York school you're referring to, though). As a Canadian you'll have much better chances at private schools, which aren't subject to the various state government imposed restrictions, versus public ones.

Well, I also took Canadian DAT in February and scored AA:19 and TS:20. I'm not satisfying with this so I'm planning to stay in Seattle and take American DAT in August.

Sprgrover- What was your gpa/dat to get into Penn?
New York = New York University

Thanks for everyone's feedback so far 🙂.

You'll be good w/ a 20/20 for NYU & USC. Need to get that PAT up.
I got in but was tooooo expensive

Hey i am a Canadian student as well. I go to university of toronto and here are my stats.
My GPA is around 3.1 and i was able to do well in my third and fourth year.
3rd year: 3.4
4th year: 3.6
BTW in both years, i took high level science courses and i am planning to stay one more year to try to boost up my GPA.
I've also written the Canadian DAT and here is my score.
Bio:20
GC:23
PAT:20
Carving:20
RC:15 (I wasn't able to concentrate cuz i was really hungry at that time and my food ran out on me. I swear it is not an excuse)
I am thinking about writing the American DAT this year. Can anyone please tell me if my RC is going to affect my chance of getting in and i should write the DAT again?

Private schools are the way to go if you're Canadian. Apparently its harder to get into a public school, but its not impossible (interviewed at Michigan and UConn, received a phone call from the former on December 1). But as stated before, you'll need at least a 22 AA to have a decent shot at Penn and Columbia, 17s won't cut it at pretty much all the schools. The avg. scores at Michigan for the incoming class is 20 in all sections, I would figure Columbia and Penn should be 22+ and the scores typically increase every year.

I know Penn and Columbia require higher DAT scores, which I'm writing again in August. But will a 3.57 (3.39 sGPA) cut it at those schools? Or the other ones I listed?

Should I apply to Nova and Tufts as well, since they're private? Or even Creighton or Loma Linda?

Just another quick question, the Tufts website says they require two recommendations from science profs - one from a biology prof and one from either a chem, math, physics or biochem prof. I was wondering if Microbiology or Physiology would count as 'Biology', in regards to the LOR's. I'm a Physiology major and I'm just finishing up my degree - I took Bio only in 1st and 2nd yr and in classes with 500+ other people. I barely knew my prof's. If anyone knows, I'd really appreciate a response. Thanks 🙂.

Microbiology and Physiology should be under Biology electives...that should work out fine.
