So...I started studying for the Bio section on the DAT, and I couldn't be more lost. The topics are listed on the dat examinee guide for 2009, but how in-depth do we need to go? I'm pretty good in terms of understanding certain processes, but I've heard (from more than one person) that DAT bio is a random bag of facts, and more often than not, you will get obscure questions from way out of left field.

Example; "Cell and Molecular Biology" is a topic that is covered on the DAT. During my undergrad, I took an entire course called "Cell and Molecular Biology". I remember memorizing elongation factors and a myriad of transcription factors for my exams. Will we need to know the same level of detail in order to be adequately prepared for the DAT? The depth of the material required is not evident on the ADDA guide.

I know that my post comes off as immature. I can see many members reply with "well they're not going to hold your hand and show you everything." I am by no means trying to find an easy way out. I am truly lost and confused, and in order to set up a reasonable studying schedule, I need to know what materials I need to cover. I have also read some posts suggesting certain texts.

From those recommended by fellow SDN members, my school has at its library campbell bio, MCAT Examkrackers, Schaum's, Gre Bio, Barron's AP Bio, Cliffs AP Bio, and I bought Kaplan BB. Will memorizing details from all these books help with my score? Again, I am pretty good with understanding, for example, how a nephron works, the buffer system in the blood, enzymatics/michaelis menten curves.

Thanks

I'd suggest just reading over review books to get the main idea of concepts, then when you do practice tests...that'll give you more of an idea of how in-depth you'll need to know the info.

im in the same boat , bio is so broad , what are the recommendations for something that entails most of what we need to know in as little as reading as possible? iv heard barrons bio, kaplan bio, exam crackers, whats the best out there?

well i am actually memorizing the topics in Kaplan book. Im using school text books to further understand those topics. Other than that, I am depending on my high level bio classes to help me out if a difficult question comes up and solve it to the best of my ability.
