You usually dont need to. If it something like that shows up in a passage, it is probably irrelevant or is explained in the passage.

Sometimes you just run into questions that are "WTFers". Pick your best choice and move on. Most of the time when questions appear to be off the wall and are included in passages you will find that the explanation is in the passage.

What was the actual question and answer choices?

I can't remember, but vole was the obvious answer choice to me ... it was asking for a rodent.

The other answer choices were like a fish or a lizard or something. I had never heard of a vole before that, but it certainly sounded like a rodent.

I think this was a good example of being able to get the answer correct not because you know which one is right but because the other three are obviously wrong.

Yes, it sounds like that's what you needed to do. That's why I asked about the other 3 answer choices. I used weeding out primarily on the bio section on the MCAT too.
