For now I'm thinking about applying to ~15-20 prelim programs. I would hate to have to relocate twice - for prelim and ophtho (PGY-2) - so i'll rank prelim programs in my current state and wherever I match for ophtho, higher.
It'll be great to get pearls about prelims/TYs from current residents!! 😀
There are a few good threads and discussions, especially from last application season.
In general, it depends on the individual and how amenable they are to moving to a random location for a year. I applied locally and all over the country, to a total of 20 programs. Went on 8 interviews, whenever I could schedule them between Ophtho ones.
Keep in mind the cushy internship programs are well known and can be quite competitive as you're getting ranked against other fine applicants going into derm, rad onc, rads, anesthesia, etc. A lot of people feel like 7-10 interviews is adequate, depending on how good an applicant you are. You definitely do NOT want to SOAP into a random prelim surg internship in the middle of nowhere.
A good backup would be your home program prelim med internship (if they have one, if not, then perhaps prelim surgery). These are generally not competitive because they are academic and rigorous. Having is as a backup means you still matched and don't have to move.
