I received an email from a program coordinator asking how I was going to rank them because that would impact how they would rank me. I know that this is a violation, but what can I really do? I liked the program, but don't want to tell them where they are ranked because it's not #1, but I don't want to be left off their list... What would you do?

I'm pretty sure this is a major violation. I believe a match violation (by the applicant) will stay on your record permanently. My best advice would be to ignore this email. Sure, there's a chance they may not rank you, but you said yourself they're not your number 1 (hopefully you'll match there and it won't even matter). I just wouldn't take the risk of having a major flag on my record.

Wow that's ballsy for the program to go on the record like that. Idealistically, you would report this right away to the NRMP. Realistically, it's much more difficult. Where are they on your list? Perhaps reply with a non-committal answer and then report them once you match at a higher ranked place.

Why would the applicant have a red flag for a violation committed by a program? It's not a violation for an applicant (or a program for that matter) to volunteer rank status. However, it is indeed a major violation for a program to ask an applicant in exchange for a higher ranking.

It would be hard to feel guilty about just telling them what they want to hear.

They're the one's committing the match violation. You just got free reign to tell them "you're my #1" with no negative consequence whatsoever.

I don't see the problem is here for the applicant.

Ive been in similar situations during interview season. At first my initial reaction was to be as honest as I could, but now I'm like f it and tell them exactly what they want to hear or something close to it (i.e. in my top 2, but leaning towards you). People on this board like to hate on applicants as if they are the only ones to engage in inappropriate behavior (sending multiple # 1 emails, etc), but there are unprofessional programs/interviewers out there too.

I had a program ask me how I was ranking them (phone call) and specifically ask "we'll are we like #1 or #2 or 3". I was so floored and shocked that they could even ask. I don't get what the advantage is for them. Why don't they just rank how they see fit? I'm sure they will fill no matter what.

You have literally nothing to lose by telling them that you are ranking #1, whether you are or not. If you end up not matching there, you can report them to the NMRP. And they can't really complain about you lying about ranking them #1, because they committed a major match violation by asking you what you'd be ranking them.

report. this is a blatant violation. they should know better

My first email to them was a simple thank you for the interview. They didn't like that I was "non-committal" in my email. I will probably send a similarly non-committal I'd like to be in your program email and wait till after the match to worry about the violation (if I still care by then).

NO!

Radio silence from here until Match day. And be sure you have screenshots of their correspondence.

I'm at a loss about how ranking based on candidates' ranking benefits the program. What have they to lose by ranking based on their own preferences?

I think for some, they like to be able to say "we only went down to #5 on our match list" at a program with 5 spots. Prestige/bragging rights? I have heard others say that programs want to match people who actually want to be at their program, but at least for me I "actually want to be" at every program I interviewed at.

It costs programs $80 per matched applicant and $50 per unmatched applicant (last time I checked) when they submit their ROL. This is also why some programs don't automatically rank everyone who interviews.

There is a fiscal incentive for the program not to rank people way above their institutional caliber (unless if they seem strongly interested in the program), and not to toss marginal names on the list "just in case" if they are confident that they will fill. Probably also a good reason for those of us who aren't superstars to send thank you notes and keep in touch.

Nope-a-dope (as my 5 year old would say). Programs pay $30 to register (after their GME office pays $175 for the entire institution) and another $30/matched applicant. They don't pay per ranked applicant and there's no fee for unmatched ranks. Because that would be completely insane.

I still don't understand this. It's not as though anyone outside the program knows how far down a program went. So where does the prestige come in ?

Perhaps PDs talking amongst themselves? Bragging rights I guess. It's stupid if you ask me, but I guess some people like making a competition out of everything.

THIS. Please listen to Gutonc and don't feel pressured into forming some type of a response.
