How bad is it to drop a class in a sequence? (HELP with electromagnetism)

higher gpa >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> lower gpa with no W.

I apologize in advance but I didn't read your post, I am just responding to the title of your post. Based on that, I would say that dropping a course beats recieving a bad grade in a course "any day of the week and twice on sunday."

In general however, dropping a course or two will hardly get noticed at the end of the day and is not going to be a problem. The only time withdrawals become a problem or a "red flag" is when you have a pattern of them. A pattern of withdrawals are generally percieved as a negative because it makes it appear as if you are avoiding hard teachers, classes, or at the very least have extremely poor planning abilities, or are horrible at managing your time / bad at recognizing what kind of load you can or can not handle. Either way avoid a pattern of them - 1 or 2 W's won't hurt you, a couple of bad grades however will.

I totally agree with everyone that dropping one course is a lot better than a low GPA. My main concern is that it is with a pre-req... and the 2nd part of a sequence. I've never been this nervous about a class before! Usually if I am not doing as well as I'd like I'd change how I study but it is just NOT clicking. I really don't think I am smart enough/my brain works in the way it needs to for this class (not fishing for compliments here, believe it or not. statement of fact).

there's no record of all past majors/minors/sequences on any college transcript i've ever seen. unless your college does this, then dropping a sequence is like changing a major...who cares?

I agree but I would like to add a word of caution from my own experiences.

Drop the course, but do make sure you will be able to take it again (whenever its offered) at your current school. Other schools may not articulate their sequences the same way.

Godspeed!

Sure it's a pre-req class but unless you are planning on majoring in physics, which I doubt considering your circumstances, there's no reason why you should force yourself to finish this sequence this year. Take it your junior or senior year when the courseload isn't as tough and you can focus more on it. You can really just study the MCAT physics on its own based on what's in the book.

Take it in the summer by itself. You won't have to juggle other classes with it and anything that might build upon semester 1 info will still be fresh enough in your head (although I don't recall anything in physics 2 that requires knowledge of physics 1 besides basic vector analysis and maybe some energy conservation (KE, PE).

There are some really good online resources for EM. Some of the youtube videos from this one teacher are FANTASTIC to do well on the EM portion.

With that said, if you fell you can't get above a 'C', I would drop the course and try again. If you can get it to a B-, I think that'd be better instead of a W.

You of course don't want too many Ws, or Cs, but one or two isn't going to warrant a mention. An F would require explanation as well as more than a couple Ws. I mean they may still ask about a single W or a C or two but it's not going to be a negative against you unless you say something stupid in response.
