I spent three years at a different college and had a cgpa of about 3.7 and then I transferred to a new school. I haven't been doing very well at all since I transferred so I decided to try and take some summer classes to try and increase my gpa. For some unknown reason I thought it would be a good idea to try and take a foreign language but it has been destroying me. I'm in an introductory French 1 class and I'm currently failing but I missed the withdraw period by about 3 days... I'm I better off taking a WF on my transcript (I already have one W but I've never failed a class or gotten a D) or should I try and keep going and hope I can get my grade to a D or C? I'm at about a 58 right now...

If it is a WF and not just a W I'm guessing there is no point taking the withdrawal because that will just go on the transcript as an F.

If that's the case stick in it and do your best. While two horrible options a D trumps an F and a C definitely trumps either and I don't think would actually be perceived THAT poorly in a way that it will really be a significant detriment to your application given its an introductory language class that clearly just looks like you weren't ready for. Even 1 F in itself, while obviously horrible, will not on itself keep an applicant out of medical school, particularly if it is a language type of class completely unrelated to science.

Your much bigger issue is turning around this overall downward trend. The best advice is to approach this with a long term perspective. Start out small----take lighter classes to fill the credit requirement and just see yourself get A's. Once you know what it takes to get A's you can slowly build your schedule up and include harder and harder classes. If you really have a downward trend you are probably looking at 2 years before you can really show that you have started to turn things around and are back to the caliber of student you were at your old college.

Like an F. It won't kill you.
