Anyone attending PCO, how bad is the town crime wise? Ive been hearing alot of negative things. Please correct me if im wrong.

I'll be a first year at PCO in August. The main campus is in a suburb of Philly, and it's a pretty nice area so I'm not worrying too much about that. Philly has a high crime rate, no doubt about it, but realize that the main campus is NOT in Philly. The Eye Institute is in the very northern section of Philly, and the area is somewhat sketchy, you'll just have to keep an eye out. The bottom line is you can get away from most of the crime if you make an effort to stay out of the city. There are plenty of stores and things to do in Elkins Park and the surrounding suburbs so that you don't have to go to crime areas. Also, there are several nice apartment complexes in the suburbs. I'm living in Elkins Park and it seems to be a great, safe area. I wouldn't live in the city, or you're just asking for it (it's tempting cuz it's cheaper rent). It has been recommended to me that I choose my friends wisely and always go in a group if/when I go into Philly. Hope this helps.

I'm a Canadian who has lived in Philly for the past 8 years. I'm not a student there...yet. PCO Elkins Park is a quiet northern suburb of Philly. The Eye Institute is in a relatively quiet part of north Philadelphia by Fern Rock, at the northern edge of the subway line. I'd expect almost no crime in Elkins Park and maybe😕 some crime around The Eye Institute. I don't know how much travelling around the city PCO requires. Anyone with some street smarts or streetproofing and some friends can survive here for 4 to 5 years. Stay out of the city and when you go in, have a cellphone and friends to help you out. If you're navigating by car/public transit, know where you 're going - invest in a GPS locator or good map so you don't get lost. Lock your doors. Philly's crime rate is ridiculous, and I don't see it getting better :scared:. However the majority of the crime is away from the campus and unless you plan on spending lots of time around Temple or West Philadelphia, you should be just fine. University City and Center City are actually pretty safe until the wee hours. Good luck!:luck:
🙂

I did my undergrad in Philly and lived in four different places between center city and west philadelphia, it really isn't that bad at all! I would just avoid certain areas of more western philly in the evening. I mean the major crime in the city is concentrated in specific areas that you probably wouldn't find yourself in anyway. I felt much safer in philadelphia than I did in New Orleans which is where I lived last year.

Plus, PCO isn't actually in the city but it's in a suburn and the suburbs of philly are generally nice.,
