Exactly-you'll have to start checking with pharmacies in your area. FWIW, I'd think that getting into a chain pharmacy would be easier than an independent. I'd skip the hospitals for now-from what I've experienced, their scheduling is harder to work school around than a retail chain-but I'm sure it also depends on who's doing the scheduling at each place.
Plus, mention that you're pre-pharm and want to learn about [insert company name here] Pharmacy. Most RXM's get off on helping students, and usually have a shift or two a week that they could squeeze you in. If not, they may know a sister store that could use you.
I applied at a Walgreens close to my neighborhood, because they were a fairly busy store. After talking to the RXM, he explained that he didn't have any openings at his store, but he would call around and get back to me. Later that afternoon, I received a call from a Walgreens 10 blocks away-the store manager wanted to interview me ASAP.
I threw on a shirt and tie and went to interview immediately. I told her how I was looking at pharmacy school, and that I wanted to learn more about the profession. She asked me if I could count by 5, and if I could start, say-now. (No lie.) And the rest is history - PharmD to be this May...
